HILE THE Michigan foot- ball team . trounced Ohio State in Michigan stadium, the Michigan rugby squad was fighting a war in the trenches- Elbel Field. Rugby players favor the "pitch" over the gridiron, the muddy, torn up earth over the clean plastic tartan turf. They have no armor or padding. There are no time-outs, and only two substitutions are allowed. There is only one referee. But there is a love for the game that protects rules and traditions. "I love the game, the guys, the comeraderie," said Darcy Hunter. It isn't that these guys are Bo's rejects. Explains Alumnus and rugby veteran Fergie Lars, "We're too smart to play football." t$ The Michigan team pushes a scrum back against the helpless Buckeye defense. Photostory by Dan Habib -ye--ap.
