The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and will be opened by local artists Map of the World. If the Del Fuegos could be com- pared to any sort of food it would have to be a good hamburger. Their rough and rowdy brand of rock and roll is real hearty and, not to get overly patriotic, distinctively American flavored. Rejecting their New Hampshire hometown four years ago to pursue their musical inclinations, The Del Fuegos settled in Boston shortly after high school. Says singer Dan Zanes, in retrospect, "It was the first band for everyone except Woody Geissmann (drummer - formerly of the Embarassments)." Incredibly enough, he adds "We got the record deal overnight after only a year and a half of sending tapes." In 1984, the band's debut record, The Longest Day met with unanimous praise from critics and college radio stations alike - all of whom went wild over the back to basics, garage band oriented R&R. Later that year, The Del Fuegos' record label, Slash was taken over in distribution by Warner Bros. Bigger times were coming, and so were a few changes. Session guitarist Jim Ralston was brought in for a little help on the next record. Why? "If you've ever seen us, there's not a lot of guitar virtuosity, or on the first album," ex- plains Zanes, "If you listen to any album that's getting played often, there's some pretty awesome guitar playing.. . Warren (brother and guitarist) and I learned more about guitar from (Ralston) than we would in two years." As for the actual resultant changes in the band's style on the tracks of Boston, Mass, The Del Fuegos may have cleaned up but they haven't glossed over their rough and rootsy feel. "We're getting better, we'll keep getting wilder," Zanes observes, "It's a weird thing for people to com- prehend if they think of us as un- derground. We approach the un- derground as being a phase you have to go through to get above ground.. . We just want to be a professional rock and roll band... a professional garage band. We don't want to be a garage band. Just because we can't play our instruments we kind of are by default." YEA, BUT WHAT ABOUT- The Boss? rock and Roll is in again, three cheers for the red, white and blue... doesn't this new trend help The Del Fuegos? "I think because we grew up listening to music of the '50s and '60s, the music we play now would be like that regardless," Zanes explains, But it's a case of being in the right place at the right time." ,4 .A A 2 Baroque masters By Katie Gentile That magical and long-awaited week is finally upon us. yes, those seven wonderful days of final exams are staring us all in the face. What to do? Treat yourself to a great concert sponsored by the local organization Ars Musica. Ars Musica has been performing out of Ann Arbor for over fifteen years, and despite having received much national recognition, they are still continually over-looked by the local population. In fact, Ars Musica is one of the only organizations that play chamber music on the Baroque instruments it was written for. Their concert Sunday will be a won- derful example of Baroque music at its best. It will feature the Parisian Quartet by the pre-eminent Baroque composer Georg Telemann. The chamber ensemble will consist of four musicians. The instruments used will be authenticly Baroque. Now, if you still can't seem to tear yourself away from that increasing multitude of studying, think of this: the Baroque era produced music that is usually absent from the list of "popular" classical music due to the unique sounds created by the original Baroque instruments. So dispell your previous notions of all classical music being the same. Pry those weary, blood-shot eyes out of the texts and at- tend the relaxing and innovative Ars Musica concert, Sunday December 15, at 8 p.m., at the First Congregational Church of Ann Arbor.
