The psychology game will continue tomorrow when Florida Southern comes to Ann Arbor (Crisler Arena, 2 p.m.). George Scholz' 1-1 Moccasins, ranked eighth in Sports Illustrated's Division II poll, may already be psyched out of a victory, despite their playing the number two team in the nation. "WE MAY NOT even show up for the game," said a half-joking Scholz. "We might just blow in a snowstorm." Scholz is afraid his club will get snowed, or better, swallowed by the powerful Wolverines, and he is not afraid to say so. In fact, yesterday Scholz was groping for answers. When asked if he'd quicken the pace to combat Michigan's height advan- tage, Scholz said, "I don't know how you can run by a Gary Grant and An- toine Joubert, I don't think anybody can do it." WHEN ASKED how he might neutralize Michigan's big men, Scholz added, "I haven't the faintest idea." Despite the uncertainties, Roy Tar- pley, Butch Wade, and Rich Rellford can be neutralized, or at least slowed down, as evidenced by Youngstown State's rebounding edge and intense defense. Scholz said he would probably use a zone defense to stop the Wolverines, but stopping Michigan may not be possible. We Reserve the Right to Limit WEDNESDAY'S CONTEST showed the lesser teams can't be taken lightly, but Florida Southern's severe height problems will let Michigan rest a lit- tle easier. Only one Moccasin poten- tial starter, freshman Kris Kearney, is taller than 6-6, and he may not even start. The rest - center Ted Kennedy (6-6), forward John McNulty (6-6), and guards Bob Gyori (6-4) and Jerry Johnson (5-11) - average 6-3, so Florida will give away points to a size disadvantage even before the opening tip. Most important, Southern will be hampered by the absence of last season's Moccasin Most Valuable Player, 6-5 forward Glenn Hanson. The Muskatine (Iowa) Junior College transfer broke his wrist during an early practice and has yet to play this season. Hanson led the team in rebounding and was second in scoring as a junior, and is expected back in i two weeks. The Moccasins also lost a 6-10 transfer student at the end of last year. But according to Michigan coach Bill Frieder, an upset is always a possibility, especially when the psychology of the two teams' rankings is considered. "YOU THINK you're gonna win these (easier) games, but you don't know," Frieder said. "If you give a team an idea that you'll beat 'em, they might play really hard and beat you. You never know." Scholz, however, won't even think "upset" - at least, not in the game. "The only thing that may get up- set," said Scholz, "is my stomach, from playing Michigan and Bill Frieder." Scholz' levity is a response to the gargantuan task he faces. With a height disadvantage, Florida Southern will probably, rely on the outside shot. "We better have good perimeter shooting against a team like Michigan," Scholz said, "or I don't know what'll happen." What won't happen according to Frieder, is Michigan getting out- rebounded again by a smaller, weaker. team. "We were out- rebounded (40-31 vs. Youngstown State) and that really upset me," he said. "We've got to be productive on Saturday and get second and third ef- forts." Gyori, a senior co-captain averaging 11 ppg, and Johnson (13.5 ppg) will most likely provide Florida's punch from the perimeter, while Kearney (11.5 ppg) and Mc- Nulty (8.5 ppg) work inside. Wade and Rellford will use their rebounding skills when Michigan takes on Florida Southern tomorrow at Crisler Arena. 10-500. OFF, Everything in Our store.
