The Michigan Daily - Friday, December 6, 1985-- Page 11 Ice rs to tangle with Broncos END OF CLASSES SHAKEDOWN ! FR M 30 O 15 I_. / - o MW- By ADAM OCHLIS As the Central Collegiate Hockey Association's schedule hits the mi- dway point this weekend, the charac- ter of Michigan's injury-ridden and confidence-destroyed club should be tested as it squares off with the Bron- cos of Western Michigan in a home- and-home series starting in Kalamazoo tonight. Western currently stands in a tie for fourth place in the nine-team con- ference with an 8-6 record, but has won four straight and six of its last eight. This is an excellent hockey team, and (on paper, at least) could provide the Wolverines with their toughest competition of the year. MICHIGAN (5-9) seems to be going in the other direction, having lost its last four. Its 0-8- record on the road speaks for itself, but victories earlier in the year against Michigan State and conference leading Bowling Green show that the potential of the squad is .unlimited. Nevertheless, the Wolverines have to stop with the "we played well enough to win" defeats and put some 'W's on the board. "This is a very important series, said Michigan coach Red Berenson. "We can't fall any further behind these teams and we have to get our confidence back." THE BRONCOS are an offensive express, and add to that the fact that they get decent goaltending night-in, night-out makes them one of the class teams in the league. "We've been pretty consistent all season," said Bronco coach Bill Wilkinson, who holds a 7-2 mark against the Wolverines. "Obviously we can't win them all, but out of the 16 games we've played so far, we've only had one bad game (a 5-3 loss to Lake Superior)." Leading Western's firepower is senior all-everything Dan Dorion. The right wing from Astoria, New York leads the CCHA in scoring with 17 goals and 20 assists, and just last weekend became the Broncos' all-time leading scorer with 226 career points. In 1984 Dorion was a second team All- American and last year was an All- CCHA honorable mention selection af- ter his 67 point season. WILKINSON, however does not rely solely on one player. Right wing Stuart Burnie (17-12-29), center Troy Thrun (11-13-24) and freshman center Ron Hoover (8-13-21), last week's player-of-the-week, are all dangerous with the puck. Defensemen also par- ticipate in the Broncos' wide open of- fense as Wayne Gagne (2-22-24) and the league's top scoring blue liner from a year ago Chris MacDonald (4- 15-19) can also put the puck in the net. "We know that Western is a good team with the puck, and they can score goals," said Berenson. "They have four or five strong offensive players and we'll have to be aware of them. "'I think we can play with this team, though," he added, noting that there has yet to be a team Michigan can not give a good game to. IF THE Wolverines are to pull out one or even a much-needed two vic- tories this weekend, the team is going to have to pull together and rally around itself. Due to circumstances beyond Berenson 's control, Michigan will be operating with only four healthy defensemen, a group that has struggled all season long even when everybody is physically fit. While both Gary Lorden and Bill Bruaer have come back slowly from injuries, Berenson has been forced to move Sean Baker, normally a fourth line winger to defense. Tom Stiles, who returned to action last week against Ohio State will play this weekend despite not being at 100 percent. Even with the matchup looking to be in favor of the Broncos Wilkinson is wary of the Wolverines. "They've always played us tough," said the 1983 CCHA coach-of-the-year. "They're young and a bit inexperien- ced, but they make up for it with hustle and determination." Both games start at 7:30 with Friday's up at Western's Lawson Arena and Saturday's back in Ann Arbor at Yost Ice Arena.
