A clean shave makes a sea of dif-
lerence in racing times for any men's
swim team.
But a mere slab of shaving cream
ever scrubby whiskers and a flick of a
Bic razor just won't suffice. It takes a
sacrifice from these men to put a
'azor to their legs and chests for
'smooth skin and shaved times.
ALONG WITH a more relaxed prac-
tice shedule, the shaving technique is
the strategy that the four other teams
will use against Michigan in this

weekend's Eastern Michigan In-
vitational.
"All of the other teams will be
shaved for this meet," said Jon Ur-
banchek, Michigan's fourth-year head
coach. "That should make the races a
lot closer since it knocks off two
seconds for every hundred (yards).
They'll all be coming out like a lion's
den."
Aside from the Wolverines, this
weekend's competition will include
Division III champion Kenyon;
Eastern, which has won seven of the
last eight Mid-American Champion-

ships; Oakland University and Miami
of Ohio. These teams should all be in
prime racing condition, according to
Eastern coach Mike Jones.
"ONCE A year, for a big meet,
teams do what we call being 'tapered
and shaved,'" Jones said. "This
means that we don't practice as hard,
so we're rested, and we shave off our
hair."
Michigan's goals, however, are dif-
ferent. Urbanchek, 23-1 in dual meets
at Michigan, says the Wolverins will
be swimming through this meet tired.
"We may not take a lot of firsts,"

Urbanchek admitted. "But, we will
try to swim our season's best un-
shaved times to see if we can go faster
as compared to a year ago."
MICHIGAN, which finished second
in the Big Ten last year, is setting its
sights on the Big Ten Championships
and the NCAA's.
"This is just a stepping stone for
us," said Urbanchek. "There is no
emotional or physical commitment
for us."
With Dave Kerska and Allen
Gelderloos out with injuries, Urban-
check concedes that this meet will be
demanding for the Wolverines. "Our
sprinters will be really challenged,"
he said.
Jones, however, is confident that
Michigan will leave Ypsilanti with a
team victory.

HOUSTON (AP) University of
Oklahoma nose guard Tony Casillas
was named last night as the 1985 win-
ner of the Lombardi Award, which
annually goes to the player deemed as
the nation's top collegiate defensive
lineman.
Casillas beat out Michigan defen-
sive tackle Mike Hammerstein, one of
four finalists for the award.
Ohter finalists for the trophy,
presented in honor of the late National
Football League coach Vince Lom-
bardi, were Boston College nose
guard Mike Ruth and Oklahoma State
defensive tackle Leslie O'Neal.
Officials of the award refuse to an-
nounce the vote totals of the four
finalists.
Casillas, a 6-foot-3, 280-pound

senior, had 35 tackles for losses this
season with 22 drops for 110 yards.
The senior defensive end also added
73 tackles, had nine quarterback
sacks for 53 yards in losses, one fum-
ble recovery and one interception
O'Neal, a 6-4 249 senior defensive
tackle, had 93 tackles, nine quarter-
back sacks and 15 tackles for losses to
key the Oklahoma State defense.
