4 Page 6 - The Michigan Daily - Monday, December 2, 1985 Doctor dispel myths surrounding AIDS causes (Continued from Page 1) HEALTH Service Director Caesar Briefer is worried that if a case does turn up in a University residence hall, students will react like Gordon on their false assumptions, causing "some kind of crazy witch hunt" to develop. In an attempt to educate the University community and avoid the hysteria that might follow news of a student or faculty member contrac- ting the disease, Health Service last month published a pamphlet detailing the most recent medical information on AIDS. The Centers for Disease Control also provides an information packet that gives detailed information about the disease. CDC'S Fallis said the general sym- ptoms of the disease include fever, diarrhea, swollen lymph glands, night sweats, certain unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, and extreme fatigue. However, the Health Service pam- phlet warns that these symptoms are not exclusive of AIDS, and the ap- pearance of these symptoms does not necessarily mean one has the disease, especially if one is not in the risk groups (homosexuals, intravenous drug users, etc.). Even if someone is carrying the disease they may not experience the symptoms. It can be "six months to five years from the time of exposure to the time the first symptoms ap- pear," Fallis said. UNIVERSITY Hospitals' Ross said there are currently an estimated one million AIDS carriers in the United States. Carriers are "people who are positive to the blood test but don't have any evidence of the disease," he added. Although there is no "test for AIDS", Health Service's Briefer said a method of testing for the disease is to test the blood for the antibody that develops in response to the H TLV-III virus. But if you test positive, it does not necessarily mean you have AIDS, will develop AIDS, or that you are a carrier, said Marvin Marks, chair- man of the Board of Directors for Detroit's Wellness Network, a volun- teer educational and support service. OF THE people in the U.S. who tested positive for the antibody, only about 20 to 25 percent have developed the disease, said Dr. Harold Ober- man, head of clinical pathology and the bloodbank at University Hospitals In Michigan, the test is offered at University Hospitals and Henry Ford Hospital in Dearborn and Detroit as well as in Grand Rapids, Flint, and Traverse City, Marks said. Around 700 to 800 people have taken the test in this state since it was first offered here in April, said Marks. He cited the average cost at $25 a test. BUT enrolled University students do not have to pay for testing or con- sultation if they go to Health Service, said Mark Erichson, a Health Service employee. If students go to University Hospitals directly, rather than have Health Service send the blood sample over to them, the cost would run about $150 for testing and consultation, Erichson said. While testing for the antibody is a simple process, treating the disease once it develops is difficult. Treat- ment is limited to treating individual infections that occur from the break- down of the immune system, said Health Service's Briefer. It is a "very unsatisfactory way of treating the disease ... as soon as you treat one infection it's not long before the next shows up ... it's a losing bat- tle," University Hospitals' Ross said. HOSPITAL costs for AIDS victims are soaring. Ross estimates the cost for one day in the hospital is $1,000 and one month about $30,000 for an AIDS patient. Marks of the Wellness Network said the cost of treating the infections which occur because of AIDS is high because most of the medicine is not available in the United States, and there is no inexpensive way of producing it. The average cost of medication alone for an AIDS patient is about $100 to $200 for a week to a month, he said. "Michigan at this point is enjoying a very low case load," Marks said. "We're now where San Francisco was about four to five years ago.- Although most experts don't see an AIDS crisis in this area yet, Marks notes that the rate of cases is doubling annually nationwide, a vaccine is not expected until the next three or four years and a cure not until the next ten years. Tomorrow: the University's efforts to educate students about AIDS. , 4 NYC to begin AIDS education in classes NEW YORK (UPI) - Schools chan- cellor Nathan Quinones said yester- day that teachers in the nation's largest school system will start in- structing students about the deadly disease AIDS in sex education classes as early as February. "WE can't afford much time, in terms of the dimensions of this disease," he said in a taped interview aired on the WNBC-TV program "Newsforum." SOME religious and political leaders reacted immediately to Quinones' announcement, saying they were worried that an AIDS education program would encourage promiscuity and sexual experimen- tation among the 946,000 students in the nearly 1,000 schools. Quinones said, "Let me first say that I have indicated to the board (of education) that we have to encompass AIDS within 'Family Living and Sex Education'... and that this is an issue that I am forcefully going to press for, in terms of including it in the schools of New York City." He said be hoped to have an AIDS program in place by February, when the new school semester begins. QUINONES said two superinten- dents in the high school division were already working "to see how the Quinones said, however, that he did not know any specific cases of high school students with AIDS. ONE UNIDENTIFIED second- grader with the AIDS virus has been 'We can't afford much time, in terms of the dimensions of the disease.' -Nathan Quinones, New York City Schools Chancellor get AIDS, what do you teach next?" "Orthodox Rabbi Yehuda Levin, a former mayoral candidate and a member of the Family Defgense Coalition, said he was worried that the AIDS education program would e62 courage promiscuity among students. He said it "could put a train of thought in children's minds that would lead them to do activities that might otherwise have not been done, such as anal intercourse. "With nearly a 50 percent dropout rate, with an educational system that has been proven ineffective, it's ludicrous to think that they have not taken over as moral arbitrators, Given their track record... that'll probably blow it in terms of AIDS," Levin said. HE SAID THAT Quinones woul engage in social engineering and "might be less than honest.. There is a right and there is a wrong in sex. I don't think Nathan Quinones has the guts to teach children in schools right and wrong." curriculum could be established in grades nine through 12." The schools chancellor added that "given the experimentation that star- ts in adolescence with drugs and with sex, the odds are that we certaining have" students suffering from the in- curable Acquired immune dificiency syndrome in the city's 111 high schools. attending a New York City school over the objections of some parents. He said he expected opposition from religious groups over the AIDS education program. Cardinal John O'Connor of the Ar- chdiocese of New York said he wanted to see the plans before he commented, but added, "If you teach that if you participate in certain activities you I U pZ I Di 71C4t- U(fOj 7 6 LOST & FOUND FOR SALE FOR RENT STUDENT SERVICES BUSINESS SERVICES MISCELLANEOUS WANTED: Staff-paid parking permit for winter term.
