Page 6 - The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, November 27, 1985 1 POLICE NOTES Break-in reported A break-in was reported on Stone Road Monday, according to Lt. Gerald Miller of the Ann Arbor Police Department. A door was forced open, but nothing was reported missing. Cars stolen Three vehicles were reported stolen from the campus area Monday, Miller said. An 1985 Buick was stolen from the area of State and Hill Streets, a 1977 Buick was taken from the area of Fletcher and Washington Streets, and a 1979 Oldsmobile was stolen from the 600 block of South Forest. Larcenies reported A purse containing $35 and a wallet with $10 were stolen from Hill Auditorium on Monday, said Bob Pifer of campus security. Pifer also said a purse containing $110 was stolen from a file cabinet in the Fleming Ad- ministration Building, and a purse containing $63 was taken from a room in the Legal Research Building on Monday. -Jill Oserowsky ti Q 3 Chilly stroll Daily Photo by DEAN RANDAZZO A lone pedestrian walks across the Central Campus Recreation Building bridge yesterday. (AP)-Em- ployers should give parents of newborns six-month leaves of absence with partial pay to prevent lasting damage to their families, a Yale University committee of family ex- perts said yesterday. Parents are stressed, alienated, and unhappy in trying to balance the demands of work and babies, said Edward Zigler, director of the Yale Bush Center in Child Development and Social Policy. "WOMEN are literally splitting themselves in two," trying to work and care for children, said T. Berry Brazelton of Harvard, a well-known pediatrician and author. Zigler and Bra zelton were among the experts in child development, education, social policy, business and sociology who spent two years studying the question of maternity leaves. The panel proposed granting leaves at least six months long, with 75 per- cent pay for three months. The estimated $1.5 billion cost of the leaves could be paid from an insuran- ce fund into which employers and em- ployees would contribute, the com- mittee said. THE GROUP urged the federal government to require such insurance, but said employers should grant the leaves in the meantime. Only about 40 percent of employed women have access to maternity benefits, according to a 1981 study. Six months with an infant would allow the parent staying at home to bond with the baby who in turn would start developing a sense of trust, Brazelton said. If the child does no gain this, the stage is set for an "en cyclopedia" of problems in later life, Zigler said. The committee also recommended that employers look for other ways of assisting parents of newborns and newly adopted infants, including im- plementing flexible work schedules, reduced work hours, job sharing and child-care information and referral services. A uthorities6 probe Iowvffa plane' wrek DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -Authorities probed the charred wreckage of a twin-engine plane yesterday for clues to the cause of A fiery crash that killed the pilot and six members and coaches of the Iowa State University women's cross- country team. The Rockwell Aerocommander crashed during a freezing drizzle Monday evening, narrowly missing houses in the residential neigh- borhood where it slammed into a tree and cut power to 1,600 homes. There were no injuries on the ground. "We haven't found anything out of the norm," said Eugene Roth of the National Transportation Safety Board in Kansas City, Mo. "We're just documenting anything we can find." I3gpdian lead (Continued from Page 1) In Malta, government spokesman Paul Mifsud said the death toll in the hijacking and commando raid was 59. - one passenger was shot to death by the hijackers and the others died during the raid. Hijackers took over Flight MS648 Saturday evening on a flight from defends commndor id Athens, Greece, to Cairo and forced it to land on the Mediterranean island of Malta. They let 11 women go and shot three American passengers and two Israelis, killing one of the Americans, and threw them from the plane. Maltese authorities said that 27 sur- vivors of the commando raid were hospitalized, including the man alleged to have led the hijack team. The pilot, Hani Galal, returned to Cairo. They had said earlier that the total death toll was 60. But Mifsud said yesterday it was 59 because a Canadian baby had been counted twice.
