Woherines akn to take

tournament

WALILUKU, Hawaii (AP) -
Michigan, number three in the
Associated Press pre-season poll, will
bring back at least one souvenir of its
season-opening trip to Hawaii - the
title in the Silversword Invitational
Classic Tournament.
The Wolverines, seemingly in-
spired after a halftime break, out-

scored Kansas State, 22-6, at the start
of the second half and went on to a 80-
58 victory in Saturday night's title
game.
Roy Tarpley, scored 21 points and
Richard Rellford added 14 as
Michigan came back from a 34-32
halftime deficit. Kansas State's
Morris Coleman scored 21 points to
lead the Wildcats.

"Rellford's performance was the
key," said Michigan head coach Bill
Frieder. "I think Richard Rellford is
the most underrated guy in the tour-
nament. He was our most consistent
player."
Rellford scored nine points in
Friday night's 67-66 victory over
Virginia Tech, while Kansas State
defeated host Chaminade, 68-56.

Michigan pulled out the victory over
Virginia Tech on reserve forward
Robert Henderson's layup with 20
seconds left to play.
Dell Curry, a 6-5 guard who scored
38 points for Virginia Tech against the
Wolverines, left a big impression on
Chaminade coach Merv Lopes during
the two-day tournament.
"He's the best I've ever seen," said

Lopes, whose team lost to Virginia
Tech in the tournament's consolation
game Saturday night, 70-66.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Brad

attempts and collected a career-high

31 points last night as second-ranked
North Carolina pulled away from

victory.

Lakers are superior in sweep of 'M'

By ADAM OCHLIS
They proved they can play on the
road. They proved that they really are
a decent hockey team, and they have
-proved all season they can play with
the best hockey teams college has to
offer.
But when the Michigan hockey
players look in the CCHA standings
this morning, they will find them-
selves tied for seventh place, due
mainly to its two losses this past
weekend at the hands of Lake
,Superior State College in Sault Ste.
Marie.
INDEED THE Wolverines' (5-7)
troubles away from home continued.
The 8-3 loss Friday, coupled with an
exciting, well played, but ridiculously
refereed 7-5 defeat Saturday, leaves
Michigan still looking for its first road
win this season.
While Wolverine head coach Red
Berenson was less than ecstatic with
the two losses, his counterpart Frank
Anzalone was impressed with
Michigan's performance.
"Michigan played well," said An-
zalone. "It was a very good weekend
on their part . . . if they would have
played us last week, they would have
won (Saturday)."
FRIDAY'S GAME was one
the Wolverines would like to forget.
Michigan came out strong,
taking a 2-1 lead in the middle of the
first period. The intensity and wide-
open play that Michigan had been so
dearly lacking in its previous four
road games was evident, but two
quick Laker goals at the end of the
period gave: Lake Superior a lead
going into the lockerroom.
The second period was truly a
disaster for Michigan. After a Chris
Seychel tally, the Lakers scored three
consecutive goals to put the game out
of reach.

net, get mad.., and toss his glove,"
said Anzalone.
FROM THEN on, the referees took
over, making bad call after bad call
for both teams. A Laker goal that
deflected off Michigan defenseman
Todd Carlile's skate was disallowed,
and a controversial too many men on
the ice call also went against the
Lakers. The Wolverines got hurt when
winger Paul Jerrard did his best im-

pression of Abdullah the Butcher and
smacked the Wolverine Bruce Mac-
nab, knocking his helmet off in the
process. Both players received
penalties for roughing, although Mac-
nab did not retaliate.
"He had no control of the game, as
far as I could see," said a stunned
Macnab. "I'm not too sure he had con-
trol from the outset."
As for the game, Michigan's best of

the year on the road, the team skated
back and forth all evening. Lake
Superior's Scott Johnson notched a
hat-trick, and Palumbo scored the
winning goal at 16:18 to go in the
game. Michigan had a couple of
great chances to tie the contest, the
best being when Powers skated in all
alone with just 10 seconds remaining
on a breakaway, but flipped the puck
over the net. Grant Clark finished the

scoring at 19:53 with an empty net
goal.
"I THOUGHT we played well
enough to win,"said Berenson. "We
had a better team effort than on
Friday ... and we did everything we
wanted to do coming in.
"I don't like losing, but at least I
think this game (Saturday's) is a lot
better to finish the trip on than
Friday's."

... "most underrated guy"

McCaughey
... notches eighth goal

"We made some big mistakes in the:
the second period," said a disappoin-
ted Berenson. "They played a good
game, but they didn't play a great
game. They capitalized on our
mistakes."
"I THINK we just played very well,
they played good and that means we
win," said Anzalone logically.
Saturday's game was a totally dif-
ferent story.
Once again the Wolverines came
out strong and it was soph Brad Mc-
Caughey who gave Michigan the lead
as he took a good pass from Seychel
and put the puck past Randy Exelby
for his eighth goal of the season.
ANZALONE then pulled Exelby,
who had also played in Friday's game
in favor of Joe Shawhan, the CCHA's
best goalie, who did not start either
night.
Shawhan's stint in net lasted all of
20 seconds, as Exelby returned after
the next whistle.
