4 Page 6 - The Michigan Daily - Monday, November 25, 1985 1 Post-game revelry results in mayhem By EVE BECKER After Saturday's Michigan-Ohio State football game, the stadium tur- ned into a party of post game mayhem as fans stormed onto the field, tearing down both uprights of the north side goalpost. One University student and one Ohio State fang were arrested for disorderly fighting, said Sgt. Harry Jinkerson of the Ann Arbor Police Department. Both were released. FANS trampled two police officers who were trying to keep the field clear. The helmet of one officer was trampled to pieces, Jinkerson said. The other officer "was stepped on 18 dozen times," he added. Neither officer was seriously in- jured. "It was a little bit more rowdy than the other games," Jinkerson said. "The band members got iceballs thrown at them and the people sitting on the goalposts were also pelted." "THE POTENTIAL (for people get- ting trampled) was very high, but no one got hurt." He said the people at the game were not quite as drunk as in previous years. "I attribute that directly to the University's tighter control of alcohol in the stadium," he said. Campus Security. "Other than the goalpost being torn down, there's no damage that I know of." Fans were prepared to take to the turf three minutes before the clock ran down when they began lining up on the sidelines. They stormed the field amidst a cloud of red, the product of a smoke bomb released somewhere near the 30 yard line. At the end of the game, some fans climbed on the goalposts, while policemen stood below, breaking up skirmishes on the field. The fans also threw snowballs and apples into the crowd. The first upright from the goalpost was torn down within five minutes af- ter the end of the game. Police took it and brought if off the field. About 10 minutes later, the second upright of the north goalpost-the one nearest the student section came down and was broken up by the police. The south goalpost remained untouched. No estimatebon damage to the goalpost has been made. The police eventually managed to get the people off the goalposts and organized them- selves in a solid line to block the goalpost from fans. Approximately 35 minutes after the game, enough of the field was cleared for the marching band to perform amidst flying snowballs. Following the game, triumphant fans pulled down a goalpost, threw snowballs, and set off a smoke bomb.
