But next year Michigan will lose its starting front line to graduation, so this year's crop of freshmen will soon be the substance of Michigan's future. The 1985-86 Wolverines return their starting five and a total of nine let- termen from last year's Big Ten Championship squad. Most of the freshman will simply have the best seats in Crisler arena. Next Winter, however, things will be different. Of the starters, only guards Gary Grant and Antoine Joubert will be back. The strength and success of the Wolverines will depend greatly on how well this year's crop of recruits can replace devastating front line players like Roy Tarpley, Butch Wade; Rich Rellford, and the added dimension provided by forward Robert Hender- son. According to head coach Bill Frieder, filling the well-worn shoes of this year's starters will take patience, a good deal of instruction, and time. "The six freshmen are way behind right now," said Frieder, "it's like night and day." In the next year, Frieder will try to reconcile night and day. His task will be difficult, but not impossible. Go Fight No. ICHIGAN IS "It (the group of new freshmen) is a good class," he said. "It's probably a little overrated. Up the line, it'll be good, but most are a year or two a- way. There's no question they have a ways to go." The question is where the freshmen will be next year. Frieder has said last year's Mr. Basketball from Michigan, Glen Rice, has the potential to contribute this season. But it is next year when Rice's contribution will really count. The 6-7, 175-pound forward averaged 28 points and 12 rebounds per game at Flint Northwestern High School, and was named to the Detroit News' Dream Team for 1984-85. Rice's job along with the five other newcomers, will be to turn superb high school statistics into college reality. "I think I can contribute this year," said Rice, "but I figure next year I'll get my real shot. Hopefully next year, I'll be a much improved player, and I'll do all the things I need to do to start." Despite his high hopes, Rice is realistic. He recognizes the respon- sibilities he'll have as a Wolverine. "It's gonna be a lot of hard work. I set real high goals for myself, and that makes it even harder." One of the Flint native's main goals is adding strength.
