The Michigan Daily - Friday, Nove 'M' aimstobreak Big Ten jinx B By ADAM MARTIN B Bill Frieder isn't smiling. He can't. The Big Ten is on his mind. The media, the city, the country has tabbed Michigan as a Final Four con- tender, but first the Wolverines must contend in the Big Ten, a league where all ten clubs have captured the conference crown at least twice. "There's no way we're going to ac- complish what the people of Ann Ar- bor think we'll accomplish," Frieder said last week at the annual Big Ten luncheon. Frieder is scared. He feels a heated challenge in front of him from Lou Henson's Fighting Illini, and eight other talented clubs. Illinois faced a similar dilemma last year. The Illini took the title in 1983-84, but dropped to second in the dust of last season's (26-4) steamrolling Wolverines. The Wolverines weren't Illinois' only problem. "Last year, all the teams did research into Illinois," said Illini assistant coach Dick Nagy. "They analyzed what we did well and what we didn't, and some of our players didn't make the right adjustments." As a result, Illinois dropped six conference road games and could never recover. This year, the Illini should return, no doubt with a vengeance. Despite the loss of strongman George Montgomery the Illini return seven experienced Big Ten players, and as Nagy put it, "There's no substitute for experien- ce." Forward Efrem Winters and 1984-85 Illinois Most Valuable Player Doug Altenberger are back, as are senior guard Bruce Douglas (second team All-Big Ten last season), senior for- ward Anthony Welch and the 63.2 per- cent field goal shooting center Ken Norman, whom Nagy considers as good as, and probably quicker and stronger than Montgomery. "Our name keeps coming up," Nagy said. "We're definitely ex- perienced, we've been in post-season competition, so people expect us to have a good team. We expect to win." 'Expectations mean little, however, so Nagy's prepared for challenges from nine sides. The Illini will face the challenges with experience, as will Michigan. But the rest of the Big Ten is not as fortunate. Indiana, the team many feel will surge back to the forefront in the con- ference, returns a nucleus of three seniors and two juniors, including Olympic point guard Steve Alford. Still, the Hoosiers were experienced last season when they finished a disappointing seventh, at 7-11 in the Big Ten and 19-14 overall. This year, big man Uwe Blab is gone, and not surprisingly the Hoosiers are lacking size and muscle to fill the paint. Their experience stretches no further than 6-8, 220 pounds. Ap- propriately, Indiana's game will change. "We'll have a different look," said Alford. "It's hard to tell what we'll do. We'll be an up tempo team because we've got to compensate for lack of height." Alford hopes Indiana's quick pace will frustrate the opposition. "The key will be how much pressure we can put on opposing defenses (with the running game) before they set up," Alford added. With a well-oiled running game in high gear, Alford is confident the Hoosiers can compete for the Big Ten Championship. But few, people are as confident as Steve Alford. The Minnesota Golden Gophers might also turn some heads in the league, but no one is too sure. "I don't see why people aren't talking about Minnesota," said Purdue coach Gene Keady. In fact, people are talking, in- cluding Gopher head coach Jim Dut- cher.
