Washington * Downtown Ann Arbor * 662-0737 0 The Michigan Daily - Friday, N( Bruising Wade no bulldozer off court (Continued from Page 8) His 5.4 points per game career average is less than a fourth what it was in high school. Part of the decrease results from the different role Wade plays as a Wolverine. "Butch does one thing better than anybody on the team, and that's rebounding," Rellford said. "He doesn't need to score. He doesn't care about shooting." That, according to Wade, is an exaggeration. He enjoys being a damaging defensive player but also feels a deep frustration with his of- fensive impotence: "I played damn near fifty something minutes against Iowa (in a triple overtime Michigan win) and didn't get a basket. You get home and ask yourself, Why didn't you get a basket? Were you not working hard anough? Not concen- trating hard enough or what?" Intensity, though, is not really a problem for Wade, and he knows it. When playing basketball, he says, the part of him that "used to love rip- pin' and runnin' the streets" takes over. You can get charged up doing good on a test, but it's not that, that . . . It's dif- ferent." Wade enjoys cultivating the idea that his on-court image applies off the court. His car, a 1976 Lincoln he calls "The Green Machine," reflects his more boisterous side. "It's big, roomy . . . It's in- timidating," Wade said with a booming laugh that lets you know he doesn't mean it. Wade's Doberman Pinscher provides another example of the con- trast between his public andsprivate persona. As the dog nuzzles affec- tionately at his knee, Wade explained that he chose a Doberman because, "I like 'em mean. "Her name's Crystal," he added, "but I call her Bookie." That's pronounced B00-kee, and it's not so tough. Then again, when he's at home or riding in The Green Machine, neither is ButchWade.. - GIANELLI'S PIZZA 213 S. FOURTH AVE.
