B ILL FRIEDER often seems to take a dim view of things, but the Wolverine head coach did anything but that in selecting shoes for this year's squad. Dubbed variously "Air Wolverines," "Fried-UMs" and simply "The new shoes," the colorful sneakers were provided to Michigan and a few of the better schools Nike sponsors. What follows is a sampling of players evaluations of the flashy footwear, which Frieder says players will wear or not wear at their own discretion: Steve Stoyko: I can't think of anything good to say about the shoes. The colors are outrageous, there's not air support in the soles. Your feet really take a pounding. Roy Tarpley: I love them because of the colors. It's the aesthetic of it all. See, I go to school. Ron Gibas: They're flashy. They make us stand out. It's an honor that they make them for us. Chris Schrot (manager): They're sweet. Richard Reliford: I feel like Magic Johnson (when wearing them). The colors are light. Nice. They're pretty light. Antoine Joubert: The paint comes off after three or four weeks. This blue turns a light blue, and I don't want to be out there looking like that, so I'll get some nice white Nikes to play in the games with. kinko's' I THESE ADVERTISERS SUPPORT MICHIGAN ATHLETICS Let-'s return their support!
