I Page 10 - The Michigan Daily - Friday, November 22, 1985 OFFENSES ALMOST IDENTICAL OSU mirrors the Blue .(Continued from Page 1) "This is the first Ohio State game we're going into that I'm not sure we'll have to worry about the run fir- st," said Schembechler. "(Karsatos) is a very good passer. He's a big tall kid with an excellent arm. "But we can't ignore the tailback position either. Whoever they line up at tailback will be a good one." The loss of All-American Byars has not drastically hurt the Buckeyes' running attack as many people thought it would. Byars is questionable for tomorrow's showdown, but Woolridge and 6-3, 228- pound fullback George Cooper have combined for 1261 yards. ON THE Maize and Blue side, Jamie Morris and Gerald White have rushed for a total of 1258 yards. The return of Byars could give Ohio State the edge on the ground, but Schembechler is not altering his defensive scheme to accommodate the possible return of the sorefooted steamroller. "Byars is a great back and a great football player, but their offense won't change much if he's in there," said Schembechler. In the receiving department, Kar- satos' favorite target is Cris Carter. The 6-3 split end has 48 receptions on the year, good for 789 yards and seven touchdowns. Ohio State's big-play man is flanker Mike Lanese. The Mayfield, Ohio native is averaging 20.4 yards per reception. Five of his 25 catches have been for touchdowns. IN FACT, OSU's top four receivers have 1818 yards in receptions while the entire Michigan receiving corps has 1823 yards. Similarly, Michigan leads the Buckeyes in total offense by about nine yards per game. On the defensive fronts, some of the similarities between the two teams disappear. While the Buckeyes are fourth in the Big Ten in total defense, they are giving up an average of 99 more yards a game than the powerhouse Michigan defense. Schembechler is not taking Ohio State's defense lightly, though. "THEY HAVE great secondary backs and linebackers," he said. "You can't say 'here's a weakness and we'll attack that.' Particularly their secondary is very good. Their defense is one of the tops in the coun- try." The inside linebacker tandem of Chris Spielman and Thomas "Pep- per" Johnson may be the heart of the Buckeye's defense. Johnson, a senior from Detroit, has 113 tackles while Spielman leads the team with 116. So it looks as if tomorrow's game will be typical of the 88-year-old rivalry between these two schools. Oh, one more similarity between these two teams - both coaches have tremendous respect for the opposing team. The statements are typical of cautious coaches prior to huge games. "Michigan is an excellent team," said OSU coach Earle Bruce, who is 4- 2 against the Wolverines. "Ohio State has a tremendous team," said Schembechler. MARTIN Jim Richardson is not taking the easy way out on his way in as Michigan's women's swim coach. Richardson's Wolverines take on 19th-ranked Iowa in a dual meet tonight at Matt Mann Pool. This will be the third Big Ten meet for the, already 3-0 Hawkeyes while it is the inaugural Big Ten swim meet for Richardson. THE PAIN and aniexty of Richar- dson's conference debut should be eased considerably by the fact the man he is going up against, Iowa coach Peter Kennedey, is described as, "a very, very close friend, like family." Richardson and Kennedey started coaching together at North Carolina and then moved on to Iowa together at with Kennedey getting the nod as head coach. But the friendship should be tested today as Kennedey's powerhouse swim team looks for their fourth straight victory. "I'm sure we will swim well," said Daily Ii Kennedey, "We have more depth than them." THE ONE thing the Hawkeyes will be looking out for will be Michigan sophomore sensation Christi Vedejes whom Kennedey says is a class swimmer. "We are going to swim an aggressive meet despite the fact we are training hard," said Richardson, "They (Iowa) have so much depth, they are swimming faster this year then they were this time last year." That is a scary fact since Iowa has gone 30-2 in dual meets over the last two years. "They really don't have any weaknesses," added Richardson, "They have Big Ten finalists in every stroke." In addition to the Hawkeyes swim- ming strength, one must figure Michigan's team size into the equation. The Wolverines will only be carrying 16 swimmers going into this meet, a very small number for collegiate teams. Politicians from both Michigan and that barren state to the south will be on hand at Michigan Stadium on Saturday to get their shots in in the cross-state war. Barbs have been flying all week between the legislatures of both states, and a "lost penin- sula" outside of Toledo will go to the state that wins the contest. And now The Daily is even get- ting into the picture. This week, instead of seeking a special guest eekly from the field of athletics, we've gone to the top of Michigan politics and coerced Governor James Blanchard into playing the Daily Line. In an attempt to please all of his constituents, the Michigan State graduate selected both Michigan teams to be victorious. As a politician. he also had something very verbose to say: "It's a pleasure to join the Daily Line for the week that will see the State of Michigan deliver a double- whammy to Ohio State. The awesome Wolverines will crush the Buckeyes while OSU's Lorenzo White eclipses OSU's Keith Byars' All- Time Big Ten single-season rushing record. The Buckeyes won't want to come back to "the comeback state" after Saturday's drubbing." Well put, Mr. Governor, because we don't want the Bucks to return, not as a football team anyway. Ob sure, they can come back and deliver mail or collect tolls at the Mackinac Bridge or bus tables at the sororities or something, but they simply shouldn't return in their scarlet and gray suits as alleged football players. ne {i- LIVONIA VW-MAZDA 34501 Plymouth Rd. 425-5400 OPEN SATURDAY ONLY 20 MINUTES FROM ANN ARBOR-JUST TAKE M-14 TO PLYMOUTH RD.
