Page 6 - The Michigan Daily - Monday, November 18, 1985 Vit ality of expression (Continued from Page 5) "The quintessential troubled youth," is more awesome to Estevez than influential. "The quickest way to a young actor's grave is to think he's the next James Dean," Estevez said. In That Was Then ... This Is Now Estevez plays Mark Jennings, a young kid who just doesn't want people to hurt him. Estevez says he had to reach inside himself for in- spiration. "When I have to play someone who's very intense, who's very in- secure, who's got a lot of fears, I really just tap into my own fears and insecurities. It's a part of myself I often don't like to look at, but being in the business, it forces me to share those things with the public - that dark side of me." In contrast to the role of Andy, the clean-cut jock in The Breakfast Club Mark is very violent and at one point in the movie punches a guy in the face for no reason. "I'm a combination of Andy in The Breakfast Club and Mark in That Was Then. I think maybe we all have a little Mark in us. You know, that alter ego screaming to get out .. . and verbally or physically abuse someone." Mark has "got so much pain inside him, so much hurt, that he's got to take it out on people - abuse them." Estevez got the idea of adapting That Was Then for screen when he was filming Tex, also adapted from an S.E. Hinton novel. Estevez says he passed his free time on the set by reading Hinton novels - one of them That Was Then. "The book just floored me," he says. "The characters were so real and so rich. The book did not con- descend to young people." Estevez discovered that no one owned the movie option for the book and quickly acquired it for himself. "The book is very moraffstfc, very down, very dark," says Estevez. The film, which premiered four and a half years after he picked up the book, had to be made lighter, he said. "It was tested with a different en- ding, which audiences felt was very dark, so we felt we had to lighten it up - that we needed to have Mark learn something by the end of the film. We needed to have Mark take responsibility for his life. "The film is at the end a little am- biguous. There's not a hopeful feeling but there's not a hopeless feeling either." Besides Tex, in which he made his motion picture debut, and That Was Then, Estevez played Two Bit Mat- thews in The Outsiders, another adaptation from a Hinton novel. If there's anything characteristic of the work of the self-professed "serious actor," it's that Estevez seems to revel in his self-expression - basically he has a lot of fun on the screen. Nowhere is this more evident than in Repo Man and to a lesser extent That Was Then. Of Repo Man Estevez says, "It was a wild set. Just a crazy time on that picture. We would rewrite scenes five minutes before we'd shoot them." Estevez sees himself just con- tinuing to make films. "I've been given a great opportunity and I don't want to blow it. "I'm just having the time of my life right now. I'm really having a blast." 6 0 Walls': A world of tension in a cell Movie buffs and those concerned about the Middle East conflict will receive a treat as Behind the Walls makes its Ann Arbor premiere. This extraordinary Israeli film takes place in a prison where Jews and Arabs are incar- cerated together. The hostility between the two cultures surfaces resulting in violent confrontations. The prison emerges as a metaphor for the greater Israeli society, where inhabitants are weakened by their division. Benny Barbush, the film's screenwriter and a noted peace activist, explains that the evil warden represents, "the darker side of authority in Israel." "It is a love story," says Barbush, "a story about frien- dship, solidarity, and compassion." The film has received critical acclaim wherever it has been screened. In Israel is received an award as the Best Israeli Film of the Year, managing to slip by the media censorship that exists in Israel. It has also been an Academy Award nominee in the Best Foreign Film category, and was awarded first prize at the Venice Film Festival. The public is invited to meet Mr. Barbush at 8:30 p.m. in Angell Hall - Auditorium C, for a further introduction to the film. The film itself will begin at 9:30 in Auditorium A. The film is in Hebrew with English and Arabic subtitles, and is free of charge. It is being sponsored byt he Progressive Zionist Caucus, Hamagshimim, and Hillel. -Charlotte Levy and Sharon Fisch a Emilio Estevez, aside from acting in just about every teen drama film of the last two years, has also proven himself as a screenplay writer, most recently adapting S.E. Hinton's "That Was Then ... This Is Now" for a film script. 0 .- - I JC4- C(Toll LOST & FOUND FOR RENT FOR RENT STUDENT SERVICES BUSINESS SERVICES TICKETS JACQUES ESTEREL - watch.
