A The Michigan Daily KoKo By arwulf arwuif THE BLUES BEGAT Chicago, and Chicago begat the Blues. Oc- casionally, the Blues travels as a road band, and we, here in our sheltered university existances, are given an opportunity to bask inLive Blues right out of Chicago, the real stuff. KoKo Taylor was wearing a silky red outfit, her curly wig looking good and her voice sounding as strong as it ever has. She first won me over at the 1972 Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz Iestival, which took place on Otis Mpann Memorial Field. Today it's got an asphalt strip across it, Otis Spann 1Memorial bike path. Blues and Jazz were banished from the site. Every time I drive by it, I can see the ram- abackle stage, and almost hear Fgowlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Sun Ra, Charles Mingus and KoKo Taylor. IoKo is a roof-raiser, and when she performed out-of-doors under Ann Arbor's sky, she raised that roof too. I was barely 15 at the time, and it surely changed my life. That's why KoKo needs to travel and sing the Iues wherever she can. If the kids don't hear it, we're sunk. They'll think Duran Duran is the basis and the limit, and a great ignorance will _RRS Wednesday, November 13, 1985 Taylor: Blues Queen Page 6 descend upon the land. KoKo's got a young bunch of fellows touring with her, and during a break I spoke with a guitarist. He sat next me at the bar, nursing a Coke and cat- ching his breath. I asked where they were playing next and he said Mem- phis. Further inquiries disclosed wide possibilities for KoKo's travels; Europe, said the man, is a great place to work. A very appreciative audience for the Blues in Europe. The only place they hadn't been hitting was Japan and the Far East. I wished him luck and he went onstage to grind out more Woogie. KoKo's band is called her Blues Machine, and this is a perfect name for them. The drummer is a hydraulic lift, full of life and surprises. They cook a murderous number without KoKo, cutting everyone loose. We flail and strut. KoKo sings "Hey Barten- der," a bar anthem which has been done to death on the pub circuit here in town. Nearly every jump band plays it upon mounting the stage at Flood's. KoKo's treatment was so real, it sounded new again, with actual meaning. Funny what happens when you catch the real thing. KoKo sang a slow blues ballad, and it took my breath away. I was perched somewhere to the right of the stage, my beer bottle and clipboard in front of me, checking her out and loving it. The crowd, though, was chattering and yelling at each other, elbowing for drinks at the bar counter, and plotting meaty pickups. Television hung from the walls and ceilings of Rick's. I'm telling you, seeing Johnny Car- son up on the ceiling, with one hand in his pocket, telling a joke which none of us could hear, seeing this clever creature on a television screen moun- ted so that it shone above KoKo's head, not fifteen feet away, while she was singing us some blues, that was too much for me. But even Carson couldn't ruin KoKo Taylor's performance, and it was a delight seeing her again. I love her! I bought a copy of her latest album from her, with autograph included. She seemed tired and a little distant, as if the travel was wearing just a bit on her. This is a familiar problem, road fatigue, and with all the technical advances which have grown up through the fabric of the music, I daresay they'll never solve this one. Not so long as a musician has to travel and play for upper middle class kids out on their first or second bout of drinking. KoKo's latest album, Queen of the Blues, (Alligator 4740), is a good in- dication of how her organization sounds, and if you'd like to know what they were like this weekend, get a copy, crank it up very loud, open a beer and get someone to dance up a sweat with you. This is tough stuff, and KoKo is one tough gal. Her "Beer Bottle Boogie," "Come to Mama," and the ominous "I Can Love You Like A Woman (Or I Can Fight You Like A Man)" are all solid pieces of floor-stompin joy, right off the top of Chicago's Blues scene. The album also features special guests James Cotton, Lonnie Brooks, Son Seals and Albert Collins, making the disc an event in itself. The encouraging part of the evening was the realization that the young folks were dancing to real live Chicago Blues, and there's nothing in the world so powerful. They'll have to think twice the next time someone says "boogie," and the music will go with them wherever they run. It's forever. Daily Photo by SCOTT ZOLTON KoKo Taylor, the Queen of the Blues, played for fans - young and old - at Rick's Saturday night. In an era where Duran Duran is the end-all of modern music; it is good to see that a real legend still rocks.
