4 ARTS The Michigan Daily Tuesday, November 12, 1985 Page 6 Corea 's back in good form Soft War debuts art rock, poetry at Blind Pig A By arwulf arwulf Even if you've given up on Chicks Corea for the time being, you will probably find grounds for conten- tment in his latest release. This is a welcome gust of creativity from a man who has embraced Scien- tology, God help us, and who came through town with lots of elec- tronics a few weeks ago and resor- ted to some rather formulated tac- tics. It is perfectly all right for a man to cop out once in awhile, and anyone who can make enough money to live comfortably has my respect, so long as they don't hurt anybody. Chick, like Herbie Han- cock, sometimes sells himself out. Chick has covered lots of territory in some twenty years, and I love him for the beauty which he has brought into the world. And it's exciting wondering what's next from this fellow, who has worked with Anthony Braxton and participated in the Return To Forever band experience, tiptoes on both ends of the spectrum. I've always asked myself if he will ever be able to continue the ideas he was displaying when he and Hubert Laws put together that Guijira album in 1968, especially the "Trio for Flute, Bassoon And Piano." That piece is the closest he ever came to honest chamber music, in my opinion, up until he recorded the Septet album for ECM in October of 1984. "Music for String Quartet, Piano, Flute and French Horn" is, in fact, a milestone in this man's career. The piece "Septet," in five movements, invokes Zoltan Kodaly, if not Jacques Ibert or Heitor Villa-Lobos. The Muse is summoned, and the instrumen- tation leads the vision deep into wellsprings of the stuff of which dreams are made. The players are none of them familiar to my recollection: Chick himself, piano; Ida Kavafian, violin; Theodore Arm, violin; Steven Tenenbom, viola; Fred Sherry, cello; Steve Kujala, flute; Peter Gordon, french horn. These folk must spend most of their time with chamber music. I've never heard any of them and they seem very much at home with the moods which Chick has written upon for them. The fifth movement was by favorite, for its spunk. Naturally, I'd expect the piece to be caught as a whole, but with the fifth coming in at the beginning of Side Two, one finds it stands just fine on its own. Chick says he im- provised while he composed this thing, and I must say it flows beautifully. By Hobey Echlin S OFT WAR, an unusually diverse group of musician/poets from Detroit, make their Ann Arbor debut at the Blind Pig Tuesday night. To call them art-rock wouldn't be doing them (or the listener) much justice so you'll just have to bear through a few thoughts. Made up of fusion bassist Kneil Ivory, progressive rock guitarist Er- nie Douglas, Zappa-influenced drummer John Dennis, classical/punk-inspired guitarist Greg Kutcher and avant-garde poet/singer Tim Eldair, Soft War of- fers a brand of "upbeat fatalism" that packs the punch of an over-21 Midnight Oil. Their eponymous eight song casset- te on Rude records, features excellent vocals from Eldair, diversely uplif- ting guitar work from Kutcher (ap- proaching the unlikely comparisons of Robert Fripp and Peter Buck), as strong, jumpy basslines from Kneil Ivory keep the whole thing rolling and soaring along. Tracks like "Babel" and "Stay" show the kind of punch Soft War packs, while giving you printed lyrics on the cassette case so you know where that punch is coming from. A Where is it coming from? Mostly the mind of Tim Eldair, who, judging from his lyrics and pamphlet of poems, is as confusing as he is in- triguing. "Babel is a song about the death of meaningful language, when specialization becomes so extreme that communication breaks down," he explains, not without some deliberate ambiguity. Be that as it may, the lyrics con front you with enough confusion to want to give it a second listen, that is if you stop dancing long enough to rewind the tape. Thoughtful art-rock with an upbeat approach to pessimism? A guitarist who lists Black Flag and Stravinsky as influences? Self-styled "pop-subversives" who can give us the infinitely poppy "Stay" right along side the abstract pessimism of "Babel"? A band who could just as easily be compared to a non-self-indulgent Roxy Music as they could elude the "jazzy R.E.M.1 moniker? Can these guys be for real? See for yourself, as Soft War debuts the Pig tonight. Admission is free and action begins around 10:30. 'Elektric' jazz artist Chick Corea finds a positive direction with his new group of musicians on his latest LP, Septet. The other composition on this album is entitled "The Temple of Isfahan." (I'm hoping this isn't a mythical invention of L.Ron Hubbard) It's much more of a Corea Jazz sound, and less of a chamber music rush than "Septet." The disc as a whole is a delight and I encourage seasoned listeners and newcomers alike to try this release and see how far Mr. Corea can take you. I'm hoping he does more along these lines. Mr. Chick, can you hear me? How's about a concerto, or Sym- phonic Wash? I'll listen.
