INSIDE

How true it is that words are but vague
shadows of the volumes we mean, little
audible links, they are, chaining together
great inaudible feelings and purposes.

R EASON is the god of simple minds. As if
a person could really grab a hold of a
speeding car by the door handle. That's
an art story - the speeding car. And
that's Catherine Rambeau, to name one - out
there trying to grab a moving car by the door han-
dle.
The approach is all wrong; there are certain
things you can't do with reason, even spiced with
cuteness. You can't live in a postage stamp little
world - however reasonable - disseminating pat
litle reasons for everything, and call it arts
criticism.
You could just as easily put out the fire of
Romeo and Juliet's love with a squirt gun. The ap-
proach is all wrong.
People really aren't stupid. They know it's the
way an arts show makes them feel that matters -
not whatever paltry little reasons critics can
dredge up from the murkiness of their thoughts to
explain whatever leaked into the pinhole of their
mind's eyes.
So why don't critics write about how they feel in-
stead of what they so artificially think?
Now you know how I feel and what I'm trying to
do.

Cover story
Scotland's Simple Minds are a
phenomenon in pop music, a group of
perfectionists whose thoughtful,
dynamic rock has made them super-
stars in Europe. Leader Jim Kerr and
company play Hill Auditorium Mon-
day night as part of a North American
tour in support of their new album,
Once Upon A Time. Read the saga of
Simple Minds. See page 3.
Movies
Action adventure afficionado
Richard Campbell explains how
Remo Williams: The Adventure
Begins missed a great opportunity to

embody the quirky "Destroyer" series
anti-pulp novels on which it is based,
but he decides The Adventure Begins
is fun anyway. See page 4.
Catch of the day
Keats said in a letter to Shelley that a
poet must "load every rift with ore."
Weekend columnist Mike Fisch has
discovered that computer poets in
town are churning out some real
metallic clankers. See page 5.
Entertainments
This regular feature of Weekend

magazine proves there's more to Ann
Arbor nightlife than walking around
smashing bottles. And let's not forget
afternoon and morning life. Enter-
tainments is your guide to campus
cinema, first-run movies, concerts of
all kinds, theatre, and dance. And for
that day when nothing quite looks
good, checkout the listings under
"Furthermore." See page 6.
Comedy
Hot on the heels of the financially
successful First Annual Ann Arbor
Comedy Jam comes more knee-
slappin' good fun in the form of one of

America's most highly reputed
bastions of lampoon, The Second City
Touring Company. They don't have
famous alums for nothing. See page
10.
Food for thought
Hunger abatement, like many
primal concerns, is a priority oc-
cupation of college life. While food as
sophisticated entertainment is often
subverted by budgetary con-
siderations, it is essential to keep
abreast of the diversity of eats - to be
prepared for any sudden or calculated
mood shift - and fill the tank accor-
dingly. See page 11.
