0 Page 6 - The Michigan Daily - Friday, November 8, 1985 Suicide attempt haunts friends of victim (Continued from Page 1) According to Gauthier, at least another 500 students every academic year seriously consider taking their own lives. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people today, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. The popular perception is that academic stress, social pressures, or family problems lead students to take their own lives, but those factors are only part of the ex- planation, suicide experts say. "SOMEONE WHO interprets a failure in these areas as an indication of their self- worth is most vulnerable to suicide," ex- plains Gauthier. "A person who will ac- tually commit suicide is one who sees no other solutions for his problems." Dr. Robert Lobis, an authority on suicide and a psychiatrist at the Leonard Morse Hospital in Natick, Mass., says the most likely candidate is the student who interacts with peers very little and who frequently appears depressed. But another candidate, he says, is the over-achiever who experien- ces some blow to his track record and can't put the blow into perspective because of low self-esteem. An LSA junior who asked that her name be withheld describes a friend whom she believes to be suicidal as both an over- achiever and a loner. HER FRIEND, also an LSA junior, lives alone and sees her and other friends primarily in classes they share. She knows he has close to a 4.0 GPA, is worried about maintaining the average to qualify for a grade-based schola- arship. Last week she noticed her friend's mood change from shy but friendly to withdrawn. He was worried about midterms, she says. "He's say, 'I have to study,' but then he wouldn't," she remembers. "We asked him what he did, and he said he just sat around and watched TV." Another day, last week, she says, "he left class without saying anything." SHE FEARS he may try to commit suicide because he has casually mentioned death in conversations with her. For instan- ce, she says he has told her, "I don't think I could kill myself." And then another friend noticed slash marks on his wrists, she says. Often, students may attempt suicide out of a need to be appreciated for their achievements or to be fairly dealt with, Gauthier says. Looking back, some of the students who live on the Bursley hall where the freshman slashed her wrists in a suicide attempt, say their friend may have been pleading for help. THE WOMAN came to the University from a small town where she had been Homecoming Queen and at the top of her graduating class academically. But for the last two months, according to her hallmates, she had been getting Cs on her assignments. Then, on Sunday, Oct. 27, her boyfriend, who is still in high school in her hometown, called and said he wanted to end their relationship. That news, her hallmates believe, pushed her from depression into despair. Her friends were shocked when one of the hallmates discovered her later that night, hunched over her desk, her wrists slit. "Although we noticed that she had been depressed and has even dropped some hints about cutting her wrists, I can't believe that something like this actually happened," says Sharon Dyjach, an LSA sophomore who describes herself as a "good friend" of the woman. DYJACH AND other hallmates say they were hesitant to probe their friend's ominous statements and tell-tale signs of depression because they thought talking about suicide might encourage it. "Actually, the best thing that you can do is- talk about (suicidal tendencies)," Gauthier. says. "Don't be afraid to mention the word,, 'suicide' to someone who may be thinking about it. Not intervening can produce a lot of guilty feelings if a suicide attempt does" materialize." Such was the case in Bursely after the discovery of the freshwoman's suicide at- tempt. "All of us were mad and the tension was very high," observes Jamie Shanker, an LSA sophomore who lives on the hall. "Many people started to feel responsible, especially our RA," she adds. THE HALLMATES say the RA had suggested counseling, but the woman's parents thought it unnecessary, and therefore she didn't seek help. Residence staff can be expected only to be aware of people who are exhibiting changes; in behavior and to refer them to counseling says Marvin Parnes, assistant director of residence education for the Office of Housing. Parnes admits that students who live off-" campus don't even have the bridge resident advisers provide between their hallmates" and available University services. The LSA junior who believes her friend' may try to take his life has suggested he' seek counseling. But she isn't sure he has' heeded the advice. But Gaithier points out, "What helps is a" human connection. And we all have to remember that caring does not mean that we take on a life and death responsibility."
