The sophomore from Sommerville, Mass. came to Michigan this year af- ter playing his first year of college heckey at St. Anselm College, a small Division II school in Manchester, N.H. ;POWERS, WHO was ignored coming out of high school by all the Division I schools which comprise ,Hockey East in New England, is doing 4ust fine, thank you, for Red Beren- son's Wolverine hockey team. With four goals and five assists through six games (placing him third on the team in scoring), Powers is one of many players Berenson has brought to Ann Arbor in an effort to raise the hockey program back to its lofty status of the past. .But if it were up to Powers, he probably would never have ended up at Michigan. 74rHE 6-0, 182 right winger played his high school hockey at Matignon High School in Cambridge, Mass., one of the country's most prestigious hockey schools. More importantly, he played ona team that some say had no equal. "That was as good a high school hockey team as you'll ever see," said Bob Kullen, assistant coach for the University of New Hampshire. In fact, during the late 70's and early 86's, Matignon rolled to five con- gacutive state titles, of which Powers participated in three. And even though he put up impressive statistics atMatignon (35 goals and 38 assists) Powers was nowhere to be found when it came time for recruiting. "He was probably a bit in the shadows of some of the other players on that team," noted Kullen whose own Wildcat team took two of Powers' teammates. -""WELL HE was certainly overlooked by a lot of coaches out 'iere," said Matignon's long-time coach, Martin Pierce. So, as his friends and teammates went off to places such as Boston llege and Harvard to play their college hockey, Powers was forced to Flay at St. Anselm and prove the Oaches wrong. "'Especially with our team," Powers explains, "where a lot of kids were going to Division I, I felt that I cold play with them. It hurt a bit, but I went up to St. Anselm with 4something to prove." AND PROVE HE did. Collecting 35 *8goals and 25 assists, Powers was named Division II Rookie-of-the-Year blast season. It was after that season 'that coaches began to take notice. "We were under the impression that *he was playing in a place he was Above and he should have been playing Division I," said Berenson. For Powers, who along with his Matignon teammates once got .Mohawk hair cuts as part of the gpool's tradition, the decision to *ransfer was not a difficult one. "FOUND OUT I had the oppor- tiity to play Division I, and I was DRIDDE PICKS riddes, void where prohibited. Ohio State at Northwestern Georgia at Florida A7 Miami (Flia) at Marvland getting a little frustrated in Division II with the competition and the way the Division II program was run," Powers recalled. "With me, I always had the premonition of hopefully get- ting a shot of playing in the NHL, and the only way to get a shot is by playing in a first class program." Then the decision came as to which school to transfer to. That, also, was not a hard one to make. "I just felt this would be the right place for me. Coach Berenson, just the reputation he has. Just look at his track record and you can't help but be impressed," said Powers. "Also, back east (RPI and Maine were also after him), I figured they had their shot (right out of high school) and they messed up if they wanted me then," he said with a smile. FOR POWERS, the adjustment to a new style of play has been a quick, yet learning one. "It's a step up in every factor of the game," he said. "It's a quicker pace and the players are bigger and better than in Division II." "I think the intensity caught him off guard a little bit," said Berenson. POWERS, AN aspiring Business School applicant hopes that for what he plans to do after his years at Michigan, knowingfto credit a sales revenue will not be needed until about the year 2000. "Ever since going to the Bruins games when I was a little kid, it was always like, 'I'd love to play out there. Pro hockey. It would be unreal.' " Drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the ninth round in 1984, Powers, ac- cording to most, should one day get a shot at the NHL. "CERTAINLY WE think he has a chance to play for us someday," said former Flyer and now General Manger, Bobby Clark. "We wouldn't have drafted him if we didn't." "He's definitely a prospect and we're pleased to have him in our organization." Pierce, Powers' biggest fan, thinks his attitude and personality will lead him to the pros. "I don't put anything past Billy," he said. "I think he has the potential. He treats everyone with great respect. I don't see how he can miss." Berenson also thinks Powers has what it takes. "It's still early. Now it's a matter of improving. Billy has some good tools to work with, though."
