" ARTS The Michigan Doily Wednesday, November 6, 1985 Page*6 It smells fishy and moves fast By John Logie Fisher: Hello...yeah....what's hap- pening? Daily: Not much, who've I got? F: Norwood. D: Norwood again. This is John again, we spoke earlier this summer. I didn't see your show this summer, but I've heard things about it, especially about a flare-up involving the band... Do you BLOOM COUNTY Watch for it in e~. remember what happened? F: Yeah, I remember...uhh...you weren't there? Well, by golly, don't need to know! Naww, it was just this guy didn't like us slagging Reagan. We were talking about Reagan and his colon cancer, and we might have said something about Reagan going to visit the Nazis, y'know, the SS camp in Germany, and the guy didn't like it. He wanted us to take back what we said. Angelo said, "fuck off," it's his problem if he digs a guy that hangs out in SS cemetaries. I don't dig the guy...he'll hang out there, but won't do anything about South Africa. D: The other big flap about Fishbone has to do with one of your members appearing topless in Playboy magazine... F: Yeah, they had to make him put on his pants, too. They got him really out of hand. That picture was taken in Chicago, and by golly, they drugged him, and came in and started snap- ping pictures. He took off his clothes, and I guess that was the one before he took his pants off and started slipping his willy. D: Have you had any other problems with hell-bent photographers feeding you foreign substances to lead you to compromise your integrity? F: No, except for the porno movie that Dirty Walt and I was in. We did that voluntarily. D: So I guess we aren't going to see any Sean Penn-like flare-ups to keep photographers in line... F: No, we don't care. D: You've been doing a lot of touring since I talked to you...has it worn you down at all? F: No...it's fun. We go places, meet women and drink beer...take advan- tage of a whole lot of people. D: Your latest video, "Party at Ground Zero," debuted Halloween night on MTV, for the benefit of those who haven't seen it yet, what's it like? F: Mr. T is in the video, he has this small shot. It's very short but it's very significant. D: What else can people expect from this video? F: The truth. D: The truth? F: We have compiled a lot of scary stuff in this video. It'll scare little kids and old people. It's only for people between the ages of, I say...15 and 25. D: I know it's pretty much up to the company, but do you have any plans for an album any time soon? F: No. Uh-uh. We don't know the next set we're gonna play, so how the hell do we know when we're gonna do an album? We didn't know the first one when we went into the studio. It's kind of fun doing things like that. We have enough material for a couple of double albums. I wrote down all the songs that we are currently ready to per- form, and it's like, 24, and then there are a few more that we haven't played in a while. But we're constantly writing new songs. We would rather do a few new songs, and document our creativity now. D: Are the band's early songs a lot Antique Pink pales in long production different from what you're doing now? F: Definitely. The band is constantly going into new areas. New grooves, grooves that feel completely fresh Yo us. Just in this year there was a time when we created a lot of slower music, and now we're starting to create a lot of fast stuff again. It'san expansion on sound...using different elements, because we're still lear- ning. We're still learning how to play our instruments, and we're still lear- ning how to listen to ourselves. By Lauren Schreiber FRIDAY EVENING marked the English- premiere of Heinrich Henkel's play, Antique Pink. Although it stars fine actors, including Academy Award-winner Kim Hunter, there is something a little too unusual about a play that leaves its audience in complete silence for 10 minutes while an actor paints the set. A woman behind me commented to her com- panion, "This is incredible - a bunch of adults sit- ting around watching this. . . I think they're kid- ding us." I had to agree with her. At one point in the play, the audience sits ... and sits. . . and sits; as the young pain- ter, Pascal, paints . . . paints . . . and paints Margaret's living room a flamboyant pink. When I found myself wondering how the set would be fixed for the next performance I knew the produc- tion went too far. Antique Pink is the story of Margaret (Kim Hunter), a 70-year-old woman who seeks change in her life after the death of her mother. She begins by having her living room painted for the first time in 40 years. The play opens with a deluge of half-thoughts as Margaret empties the contents of her living room onto the porch to prepare it for the painter. The painter paints. Pascal finishes and dances around the living room ; Margaret lulls Pascal with relaxation exercises. Even the crew, dressed in painters garb, contributes to the action. Unfor- tunately, it seems that the play is a lot of action but no talk; or rather, no talk that made sense. Even if the audience gets bewildered by the ac- tions, the talent of the actors is not indoubt. All of the actors perform well despite the insubstantial material given them. They are convincing in their roles - at times even lovable. The instant Hunter whips out her opera glasses to watch the ants who cohabitate the apartment with her we fall in love with her. Hunter as Margaret is a zany old woman, full of eagerness and excitement strikingly reminiscent of the actress Ruth Gordon in Harold and Maude. William O'Leary's Pascal is a likeable fellow. His frustrations and the seriousness with which he regards his job seem sincere. Pascal and Margaret are two lonely characters who seek companionship with each other. O'Leary and Hunter establish a genuine feeling of closeness. 0 I Di 0 7,14- 5i~~7 tit LOST & FOUND FOR RENT PERSONAL HELP WANTED LOST - Necklace with wooden beads and white teeth.
