The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, November 6, 1985 -Page 5 Homosexuals criticize Republican leader LOS ANGELES (AP) - Gay leaders and man Republican politicians are criticizing the state's GOP chairman for his remark that homosexuals should become heterosexuals "for their own best in- terests" and to avoid AIDS. -"It's truly absurd," said Duke Comegys, president of the board of. the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Community Services Center and a registered Republican. "It would in- troduce the virus into a whole new population that previously has not been exposed, the heterosexual female population." GOP chairman Mike Antonovich has refused to elaborate on his remarks on a weekend television show, when he said his plan would reduce the number of acquired im- mune deficiency syndrome cases in the United States. State Rep. Bobbi Fiedler of Nor- thridge, a Republican who like An- tonovich is expected to run for Democrat Alan - Cranston's Senate seat in 1986, added: "It's really unfor- tunate that he knows so little about AIDS. Fish-fry takes on new twist in Texas JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - It looks, smells, and tastes something like pork sausage, but the critter it's made from never squealed or oinked, never had ears or a curly tail or even feet, and didn't grow up in a litter. This sausage is made of quite a dif- ferent Southern delicacy - catfish. And "cat dogs" and "corn cats" and other catfish products are in the plan- ning stages. Later this month, consumers here and in Dallas will get a chance to taste catfish sausage when Delta Industries Inc. stocks the shelves of a handful of Jitney Jungle and Kroger stores to test market the frozen patties, Delta President Thomas Slough said Tuesday. The sausage tastes something like its pork competitor, but is lower in cholesterol, fat and calories, he said. It will be sold in 12-ounce, eight-patty packages under the brand name Leroy's and will cost about the same as high-grade pork sausage. Slough said Delta Industries is developing 15 to 20 catfish food products it hopes will replace conven- tional ingredients in some foods. Illegal alien wins lottery SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - An illegal alien from Mexico who won $2 million in the California Lottery will be able to collect his winnings, but he'll have to leave the country or risk deportation, officials said yesterday. Jose Caballero, 24, said he told lot- tery officials he was in the country illegally before he spun the wheel for the top prize on Monday in Los Angeles. "THEY SAID is was no problem," he said in Spanish after returning to San Jose, where he lives with relatives who are American citizens. "They said, 'You paid a dollar for that ticket. You got a winning num- ber.'" Lottery Director Mark Michalko said Caballero will be awarded full in- stallments of his prize - $100,000 a year for 20 years - less withholding for federal income tax. "People are able to come in from any place in the world, win the lottery, and we pay them," Michalko said. Lottery officials will let the Im- migration and Naturalization Service and the Internal Rlevenue Service determine Caballero's citizenship status and tax withholding amount, Lottery Security Chief Lew Ritter said. HEALTH & FITNESS s What's Happening Action Sports War U. of Chicago researchers find 0t 'Ecstasy' damages brain cells WASHINGTON (UPI) - University Of, Chicago researchers have found direct evidence the recreational drug known as "Ecstasy," which was outlawed this summer, damages brain cells, but only after repeated use, the university said Monday. Two researchers submitted a paper to the U.S. .Drug Enforcement Ad- ministration on experiments showing rats given one dose of the drug MDMA suffered few effects, but those given eight doses suffered damage to their lrain's serotonin metabolism. SEROTONIN is a neurotransmitter involved in regulation of sleep, mood, pain perception, sexuality, aggressiveness, and other functions. The researchers said repeated in- * ections of MDMA appeared to cause *more damage than a closely related drug, MDA, which was already illegal when the DEA outlawed "Ecstasy" in July. "We conclude from these results that a single injection of MDMA may not be as toxic as MDA, but chronic treatment with MDMA appears at this point to be more toxic than MDA," ewis Seiden and Charles Schuster *wrote in a report to the drug agency. SEIDEN, a neurobiochemist, is a professor of pharmacological and physiological sciences. Schuster is director of the university's drug abuse research laboratory. The two researchers, who were unavailable for comment Monday, did not mention how close a comparison ould be made between the injections given to the rats and pills taken by people, nor was it certain what effect the brain cell damage would have on behavior.
