Pagel 0 - The Michigan Daily --Tuesday, November 5, 1985 Bo: home field is key By PHIL NUSSEL With the Big Ten football race going down to the wire in the last three weeks of the season, Michigan coach Bo Schembechler believes home field advantage will be the key in deciding the battle for the conference crown. "That home field advantage is something else," the 17-year Wolverine leader said at his weekly press luncheon yesterday. "You bet- ter take a look at that, that's the key. In all the games for contention of the title, the home team has won. "THE REASON that the home team advantage has been so important is that the teams are so close. Maybe that's the difference." Indeed one of the major factors in- volved in home team advantages this season has been the crowd noise. Iowa, which used the noise of home fans to its utmost advantage in its 12- 10 win over Michigan two weeks ago, had the tables turned Saturday in front of the boisterous Ohio State fans in a 22-13 loss. Hawkeye coach Hayden Fry was quoted afterwards as saying, "I'm not blaming Ohio State or their fans and I'm not using this as a crutch, but they've just got to change this idiot rule." Schembechler, who has been out- spoken in his complaints about crowd noise all season - especially after losing to Iowa - responded by saying, "Hayden didn't like it in Columbus. Can you believe that? How can he make a statement like that? I hope he doesn't have a heart attack." GOING PLACES? AS FAR as favorites go, Schem- bechler thinks Ohio State is in the best situation. "Ohio State plays Wisconsin and Northwestern, so they'll come here with one loss. So that's the whole ball of wax." Injuries were also on Schem- bechler's mind because four key players may miss Saturday's game. Tailback Jamie Morris has a shoulder injury and is currently tabbed as "marginal." Flanker John Kolesar went out with an ankle injury against Illinois and Schembechler is hopeful the freshman will return this week. On defense, Mike Mallory seems to be adding a new injury each week. He now has a sprained ankle and a hip pointer in addition to the broken finger he's had for three weeks. Still, Schembechler believes the linebacker will play. Safety Tony Gant has a sore leg, but should be ready for Purdue. Out for indefinite periods are center Dave Herrick and guard Mike Husar. Both may be out all season. On the favorable side, tailback Thomas Wilcher will be ready to see more action. "I'll need him," Schem- bechler noted, "especially if Morris is out." Wilcher suffered a minor shoulder separation against Indiana and only saw action on special teams at Illinois. He has backed up Morris all seaso.
