4 SPORTS The Michigan Daily Monday, November 4, 1935 Page 6 'M'icers drop pair to Team Canada 0 By ADAM OCHLIS If nothing else, this weekend's hockey series between Michigan and Team Canada proved that while the Wolverines can skate and play with the best teams, they need more intensity throughout the game to beat the best. The Wolverines did not even show up for the first period of Friday's contest, but for the next five periods Michigan played the Canadians even. A Newell Brown goal in overtime was the only difference in Saturday's game as Canada took an exciting and well-played 6-5 victory after they defeated the listless Wolverines, 8-2, Friday. IT WAS TRULY the 'What a difference a night makes' scenario. Friday's first period was simply a disaster for the Wolverines. Canada reeled off six unanswered goals, in- cluding a shorthanded goal that opened the scoring and three ensuing power play goals, as Michigan stood aroun- d admiring how well the Canadians could skate. The players and coaches agreed it was not Team Canada that got the Wolverines behind, but rather Canada's reputation. "The team was just too tentative," said sophomore for- ward Billy Powers, who scored one of Michigan's lone two goals Friday. "I think some of us, especially the new guys were just intimidated by Team Canada, just their name." MICHIGAN head coach Red Berenson was obviously not pleased with his team's effort in the opening stanza. "We didn't play well in the first period," he said. "We waited to see what they were going to do and we stood around and watched them.' The game was all but over after 20 minutes, but the Wolverines came out in the second and third period and played inspired hockey which would carry over to Satur- day. BERENSON used the final two periods to experiment with his lines, and he even put freshman goalie Mike Rossi in net for his first collegiate action at the start of the third period. Rossi, who played well in only allowing one goal, relieved Tim Makris who played better than his 9.0 goals against average would indicate. "We approached the second period with the idea that we wanted to win the second period, and then we wanted to win the third period," said Berenson. The two periods were an obvious confidence booster for the Wolverines going into Saturday's game. "WE KNOW we can skate with them," said Dan Capuano after Friday's contest. "We were kind of hesitant in the first period. I think everyone thought The Canadians (wow!). Hey, they dress the same way we do." In Saturday's game, Michigan came out ready to play, and opened the scoring with a Jeff Norton slap shot that beat Canada goalie John Kemp after deflecting off a Canadian player's skate. Don McLaren and Michigan's Brad McCaughey exchanged goals in the middle of the period, and the Wolverines went into the locker room with a 2-1 lead at the end of the first. Michigan kept up its intensity during the second period, as the two teams engaged in wide open hockey. The Wolverines extended their lead as Jeff Urban and Todd Brost offset a Trent Yawney tally for Canada. Daily Photo by JOHN MUNSON Sophomore Wolverine goalie Tim Makris makes a sliding save on Mike Millar of the Canadian National Team during the second period of Friday night's game. Team Canada defeated Michigan, 8-2, Friday and 6-5, Satur- day at Yost Ice Arena. No miracle this time BERENSON WAS pleased by his team's play in the first two periods. "I thought we got off to a good start," said Michigan's second-year head coach. "We took them off their game a little bit. We were more confident with the puck." In the third period, the Wolverines reverted to their cautious ways, being outshot 13-4 in the period. Canada came out storming, as Mike Millar took a bouncing puck in front of Michigan's goal and whacked it past a helpless Lindgren at 0:20 of the period. FIFTEEN SECONDS later, Michigan forward Tom Stiles took a pass from Todd Carlile and scored to give Michigan a reasonably comfortable 5-3 lead. But Team Canada, who according to their coach, Dave King, is expected to beat teams like Michigan, did not get down. Goals by Cliff Ronning at 8:40 and Peter Douris at 14:00 tied the score at five. Douris' score came while Michigan was on the power play, a facet of the game that hurt the Wolverines all weekend, as they could net only one goal in eleven map- advantage situations. Canada, on the other haId, capitalized on five of their eight power play opportunities. In overtime, both teams had excellent opportunities to win, but in the end it was Brown (an MSU graduate) at 2:40, who rebounded a McLaren shot and poked it in for the victory. Still, Michigan proved it can play with anyone. "That's about as good as we can play against that team right now," Berenson said. "We're doing the things we have to do to play well against any team.
