"It's a great rivalry," said Illinois head coach Mike White. "Our com- munity gets more steamed up about playing Michigan than anybody else, and while I don't know exactly where it stems from, it's an intense rivalry." "IT'S NOT like Michigan State or Ohio State for us, but it is a good rivalry," agreed Michigan assistant coach Gary Moeller. Rivalry aside, the game holds great importance for both teams. One more loss takes either team out of the Rose Bowl picture. Despite their early season blahs, the Illini are tied for second at 3-1 in the conference, and after Michigan and Iowa, they close out against Nor- thwestern and Indiana. "I THINK right now they're sitting in as good a seat as any of the teams that are still contending for the title," said Michigan coach Bo Schem- bechler. Michigan isn't sitting so pretty with three tough games still to come, but for now, Illinois is the focus of atten- tion. "We look at this as a big game because of the circumstances," said Moeller. "We can't lose again if we want to go to the Rose Bowl, and that's what we want to do." MICHIGAN will be in better shape than it was in last week's win over In- diana. While guard Mike Husar didn't practice all week and won't play this weekend, tackle John Elliott has recovered from the back spasms that kept him out of action last week. With three major injuries on the of- fensive line, Schembechler has been forced to put together a patchwork line involving new positions for John Vitale and Mike Krauss. Moeller thinks the pair have responded well. "Vitale is playing pretty good, and Krauss is getting better every game, but it is still an experience thing," said Moeller. THE REST of the offense came out of its three-game slump last weekend, especially Jamie Morris and Jim fHarbaugh. "I'm extremely impressed by Harbaugh," said White. "I see him emerging as an outstanding quarter- back in this league. I'd say in their style of football he is every bit as good as any passer in this league." Daily Photo by DAN HABIB Michigan linebacker Mike Mallory leaps from behind to tackle Illinois tight end Anthony Williams in last year's 26-18 Michigan victory. The Wolverines will be looking for more strong defense in tomorrow's game at Illinois. Tomorrow's game starts at 2:00 p.m. EST and can be heard on WAAM (1600 AM), WPAG (1050 AM), WWJ (950 AM), WUOM (91.7 FM), and WJJX (650 AM). The game will not be televised. White is blessed with an outstanding quarterback of his own in the form of Jack Trudeau. Trudeau got off to a very rough start by throwing 10 in- terceptions in his first three games (he only threw 10 all last year), but the 6-4, 215 pound senior has not thrown an errant pass since. Trudeau has thrown 178 passes without an in- terception over the past four games, and going back to last year, has thrown 246 straight without a pickoff in Big Ten play. For the season, Trudeau is 185 for 298, good for 1,967 yards and ten touchdowns. "I THINK he looks good," commen- ted Moeller. "The way I grade a guy is by how well he gets the ball where its supposed to be, whether it's a pass, an option, or a handoff, and he does it well. He always has the ball around 'Our community gets more steamed up about playing Michigan than anybody else.' - Mike White his receivers." The receiver Trudeau has the ball around the most is David Williams. An All-American last year with 101 receptions, the senior wide receiver already has 57 catches this year and only needs 129 yards to break Anthony Carter's Big Ten career pass receiving yardage record. He's a gamebreaker who is adept at taking a short pass over the middle and breaking loose from there. The women are scheduled to run at 10:45 a.m. and the men at 11:30 a.m. Wisconsin is favored in both the men's and women's meets but each race will be a close call between the Wolverines' and Badgers' top run- ners. SUE SCHROEDER, number-one runner for Michigan, all-American in both track and cross-country last year, has a good chance at first place in Saturday's conference champion- hosting Big ships. Her competitor is Wisconsin runner Katie Ishmael, who placed second in Big Tens last year. Having won four of five races this season and setting a course record of 14:34.6 at Western Ontario, Schroeder is prepared for this meet. "We're going into this race with a good feeling because everybody's rested and we're ready," said Schroeder speaking for the team. "So far, we've had troubles all running well on the same day, but we're all up for this week and we'll pull together, I'm looking for good results." Two of coach Sue Parks' top run- ners, Kathy Schmidt and Melissa "He's very hard to cover because they'll throw to him deep and they'll throw to him short," said Schem- bechler. "What you worry about.is. that he's such an elusive runner th he gets good positive yardage after the catch." Fullback Thomas Rooks is Illinois' second leading receiver with 39 cat= ches, and he also adds another dimension to their offense on the run, having rushed for over 1,000 yards last year and 417 so far this season. Ten meet. Thompson are out for the season and did not run at the Bowling Green meet. Parks has confidence in her "good, solid team," however, and ex- pects to place in the top five, believing that the home course advantage will add to its consistently good perfor- mance. THE TEAM running in Saturday's meet is Sue Schroeder, Kelly Bert Sheri " Sly, Traci Babcock, Bonn* McDonald, Ava Udvadia, and Julie Jerkins. Number one men's runner Chris. Brewster will definitely go to the ; NCAA meet this year, but tomorrow he will be up against last year's Big Ten champion, Tim Hacker of. Wisconsin. Coach Ron Warhurst in his twelfth year, commented about the upcoming weeks, "I don't want to go to Nationals with just one runner. I war the whole team to go.
