Yeah!" Loken cried repeatedly from his post on the steps of the graduate library. He encouraged the crowd to join in the marching band's performance of "The Victors," cheering "louder, come on LOUDer!" When the band stopped playing, Loken shouted, "Oh that band is much too much, that band is much too much!" BUT FOOTBALL coach Bo Schem- bechler stole the spotlight when he and team captain Mike Mallory gave the pep talk. Mallory, whose father coaches the Hoosiers, had a special message to the crowd: "I'd just like to tell my dad - 'We'll kick your but- ts!' A four-man group from the band won the Michimaniac contest with a song they wrote and performed about the four men who have directed the band. In contrast to the pep rally, Friday night's bonfire on Elbel Field was a rather low-key affair. Anticipation rose among the some 350 bundled-up watchers when the field lights were doused and kerosene was poured around the base of the 2-foot teepee- like structure. The crowd gathered closer when bonfire committee chairman David Wynne set it afire. One man shouted "Burnin' dwon the down the house!" others just "oohed" and "aaahed" at the sight of flames that climbed more than 30 feet into the air. Thousands of people turned out for the annual Mudbowl the next mor- ning. This year Sigma Alpha Epsilon triumphed over the Phi Delts, 12-0, af- ter intercepting passes and other swift moves. At one point a bench clearing brawl broke out between the two teams over a squabble after the Phi Delts completed their first pass return. BUT THE highlight of the Mudbowl for many in the crowd was the hand style "soccer" game played by two sororities during halftime. The women of Kappa Alpha Theta and Chi Omega played without the bandanas their fraternity brothers wore to protect their hair, and soon Daily Photo by MATT PETRIE The Friars entertain the pep rally crowd Friday with the song "Silhouet- te." 4 were covered completely in green- brown mud. They slid in the muck, pushed each other over, and hooked arms around their opponents' necks in a tackle. "I think they're great," said LSA senior Jeff Hayes, "The girls don't hold anything back. They're more ex- citing than the guys." The Thetas scored the only goal to win the halftime game. In mock disgust, the women of Chi Omega knocked their SAE coach into the mud, face first. The Thetas, too, wound up in the ankle-deep sludge when they toppled over during a group victory hug. Staff writer Philip Chidel filed a report for this story. Students march in Phillipines protest MANILA, Philipplines (AP) - About 7,000 farmers and students vowing to avenge the police killing of two student protesters marched yesterday on -the palace of President Ferdinand Marcos, but riot troops blocked them off several hundred yards away. "Blood for blood ... a life for a life, that is a promise," the marchers chanted before setting fire to effigies of Marcos and Uncle Sam. THEY WERE accompanied by a jeep carrying the flag-draped coffin of 17-year-old Emmanuel Lazo, a student killed last Monday when police fired on rock-throwing demon- strators at a city intersection. Another student, Danilo Valcos, 18, who was shot in the head at the demonstration, died of his wounds Saturday. Many protesters were members of the leftist nationalist group Bayan, which means country. Riot troops barricaded a bridge leading to Marcos' residence with barbed wire and firetrucks, preven- ting marchers from getting closer than 330 yards to the palace. A Handful of soldiers watched.the hour-long protest from the other side of the bridge while most of the troops stood by in a side street. The protesters withdrew after an hour o speeches denouncing Marcos' 20-yea government. Bayan Secretary-General Lean Alejandro, a student leader, told the crowd that Manila police Chief Big. Gen. Narciso Cabrera was "a demon worse than the devil himself." Daily Photo by MATT PETRIE A member of the Delta Epsilon fraternity sledge hammers a beat-up Nova on the Diag Friday.
