By ALINE LEVANEN About 50 students rallied last night in front of University President Harold Shapiro's house to mark the execution of Benjamin Moloise, a South African freedom fighter and poet who was hanged last week. During the candlelight vigil, studen- ts said they needed to recognize the sacrifice made by Moloise. "IT'S VERY valuable to take a moment out of our academic workday to remember Moloise," said Bob Dion, a graduate student who is a member of Free South Africa Coor- dinating Committee. The supporters of the committee gathered in front of Shapiro's house to get support and attention from the University'saadministration and regents. The members of the organization want Shapiro to take a positive stand on this issue. "Shapiro is the highest figure on this campus. Since we want him to divest the remaining $500,000 in South Africa, this is the place to begin," ex- plained Susan Carter, an LSA junior. "We are having this vigil in order to get attention, to get something going," said Brett Stockdill, and LSA sophomore. "The administration is so pro-apartheid. Graduate student Barbara Ransby, a leader of FSACC, voiced her ap- preciation over the vigil for Moloise. Ransby said that it's not unusual. for South Africa to execute people over their fight for freedom. "Let's all of us make the struggle in South Africa our struggle too," Ransby said. "We want to make it clear to the regents and to the administration that even though they're making a com- promise with South Africa, the rest of the University isn't," she said. "The policies of the University don't reflect those of everyone, and we want to make that known," Raisby further explained. Council reports progress A demonstrator who asked not to b named since he is in the country illegally said, "It touches me inside that people care enough to be here. People say that we can't do anything since we're so far away, but this isn't true." On the same question, councilmem- bers agreed yesterday that the University should only have jurisdic- tion over violent crimes occurring either on campus or when University community members are acting within their role of campus. For example, the University would have jurisdiction if a faculty member beat up a student while holding a seminar in his home. The council also yesterday voted to release a statement about its accom- plishments since it began work 11 months ago. In addition to its emergency procedures, the counci) has decided in prinicple, to allow ins dividual units of the University, such as dormitories, to make up their own rules for non-violent crimes. Rucknagel, who helped draft th4 statement, denied that the document is in response to a recent threat bX University President Harold Shapiro Shapiro told students on the council ii private meetings last month that h4 would bypass the council and submit last year's code proposal to the regenw ts in January unless it finished its work or reconsidered the adr ministration's proposal. a Student: Susan Shavin, California School of Professional Psychology at Berkeley Guestion: Emotional impact of breast cancer its treatment and side effects.
