WHILE IOWA'S offense came out fighting like a Tiger, Michigan's purred like a pussy cat, accumulating only nine first downs and 182 yards all afternoon. The Wolverines moved in- side the Iowa 40 only two times, on Big Ten Standings Conf. Overall drives that resulted in their scores. The first came in the second quarter after Houghtlin put Iowa on top 3-0 with a 35-yard field goal. Jamie Morris returned the ensuing kickoff, all the way to the Iowa 31. A few plays later quarterback Jim Harbaugh found 6-8 split end Paul Jokisch on the 12 and a facemask penalty against Iowa on the play put the ball on the six, right in front of the Hawkeye student section. The student section, and then the rest of the Kinnick Stadium record crowd of 66,350 responded by making so much noise that the Michigan players couldn't hear Harbaugh's signals and play had to be stopped three times. EVENTUALLY with the coaxing of the Iowa players and head coach Hayden Fry, the crowd quieted enough for Harbaugh to resume play. After two runs by Morris for nothing, Harbaugh hit White with an end-over- end shovel pass for the score. Michigan's other big drive came af- ter Houghtlin put Iowa up 9-7 in the fourth, when White returned the kickoff to the Michigan 37 and runs of 17 by Rob Perryman and 24 by Jamie Morris set up a 40-yard Mike Gillette field goal that put Michigan on top 10- 9. A short time later with 7:38 left in the game, Houghtlin missed a field goal try and the Wolverines had a shot to win the game by sitting on the ball. In that series with third down and two yards to go, Iowa linebacker Larry Station read the Michigan play (a handoff to Morris up the middle) and blitzed in to throw the tailback for a two yard loss. "When I looked in his eyes, I could tell that he knew exactly what we were going to do," said Morris of Station. "I think Jimmy (Harbaugh) had so many things on his mind that he couldn't see it coming." Michigan was forced to punt to the Hawkeyes who drove down for the winning field goal.
