Our treatment of animals in modern society mirrors these social hierarchies. We view animals not as a fellow species within the animal kingdom, but as objects created solely to serve us. We use them for protection, enter- tainment, sportsmanship, and of course, food products. Animals exist for many purposes, except for their own existence.
