In addition, he is one of Long's favorite targets, coming out of the backfield for23 cat- ches for 249 yards. "You're just not going to shut an of- fense like that completely down," admitted Schembechler. "Long's going to hit some passes and Har- mon's going to get some yards. The question is how much can they score. That's where it's all going to count." AND THAT'S also where the Wolverines will get a chance to play their strong suit - their defense. Michigan sports the number-one scoring defense in the land, allowing just 4.2 points per game. In the past four contests, the Wolverines have given up only one touchdown and one field goal and remain the only team in Division I-A that has not allowed an extra point. They've recorded two shutouts the latest one last week against Michigan State when they held the Spartans to 24 yards and no first down in the second half. "They've got one of the finest college defenses I've ever seen," said Fry. "Nobody has been able to move the ball against them." Nevertheless, while the nation is bracing itself for a big struggle bet- ween the Iowa offense and Michigan defense, the battle might be won in a different area as the two teams' strengths cancel each other out. IOWA'S defense which is led by senior linebacker Larry Station, has been suspect all season. Two weeks ago, the Hawkeyes gave up over 500 yards to Michigan State and barely won a tough contest. Michigan's offense, meanwhile, has been sluggish the past two games, but has still averaged 385 yards per con- test. "They're the best balanced football team in America," said Fry of. Michigan. "I don't think there's any question about that." "IT'S GOING to be a tough game,'' said Schembechler. After the contest, the winner will probably be the top ranked team in the country, a fact that both coaches will be able to accept despite their pre-game pessimism. "I'll vote for the winner as the number one team," said Fry, who is on the panel of coaches who casts ballots in the UPI poll. "If we beat Iowa, I'll accept (the top spot)," admitted Schembechler. The Daily Line special guest faltered and slipped to 7-3 last week. 7-3 is faltering you ask? Well, normally no, but after three weeks of 9-1 records and one 8-2 mark, 7-3 is falling on your face (Sorry, Red). And, believe it or not, the ever-wise Daily Scribes were able to capitalize on coach Berenson's mistakes and gain ground on the leader. Phil Nussel managed a record of 8-2, while the other three went a sparkling 9-1. weekly Daily ine NUSSEL AND Mike Redstone continue to lead the pack in the writer's division, while Joe Ewing is one game back, and Brad Morgan is ... uh, well, Brad Morgan is. Period. "It feels like the essence of perfection," said Nussel, never known for humility (or ability before this season). Seriously, though folks, the competition is star- ting to heat up now that the Big Ten season has started. Along with the tough slate of conference games on tap this weekend, big matchups between Texas and Arkansas and Army vs. Notre Dame highlight this week's action. Trying to prove they're more than just a bunch of pretty faces this week will be the Michigan Cheerleaders. Everyone knows that the guys are great at getting spirit going at games, but do they know their football? Tune in on Monday for the an- swers to these and other exciting questions. Around the Big Ten Purdue (1-1, 3-2) at Ohio State (1-1, 4-1) Jim Everett, last week's AP Big Ten offensive player of the week, will bring the nation's number one passing offense against the 11th ranked Buckeyes. Everett will be looking to throw to his running back Rodney Carter, the third ranked receiver in the country with 37 catches, and Steve r Griffin, who leads the Big five touchdown grabs. Ten with completions to the nation's number- two receiver, David Williams. Illinois (1-1, 2-3) at Michigan Minnesota (2-3) at Indiana (1- State (0-2, 2-3) 1, 4-1) See Illinois play. See Jack throw, Minnesota boasts a great rushing and throw, and throw. Last week Jack team which is averaging 204 yards a Trudeau threw 66 times, including 16 game, and 17 touchdowns. The offense FABULOUS FRIDAYS is led by quarterback Rickey Foggie, a threat both passing and rushing. He is ranked number 10 in the Big Ten in rushing, and number one in the con- ference in passing efficiency despite only 62 attempts. Indiana has the Big Ten's third ranked offense, but a pitiful defense, ahead of only Illinois. Northwestern (0-2) at Wiscon- sin (0-2, 3-2) Wisconsin played tough against Iowa, allowing only 167 passing yards to maintain its third rank in passing defense. The Badgers' 5.3 yard per carry average tops the Big Ten, and Larry Emery is 13th in the nation with 528 yards rushing. Coach Dave Mc- Clain is still undecided on who will start for the Badgers at quarterback. Around the Big Ten was com- piled by Daily sportswriter Chris Parker.
