Cards , Royals clinch pennants TORONTO (AP) - The Kansas City Royals, the team that would not quit, completed a stunning turnaround last night by beating the Toronto Blue Jays 6-2 behind Jim Sundberg's four RBI to win the decisive seventh game of the American League playoffs and advance to the World Series. The victory set up an all-Missouri, Show-Me Showdown in the World Series starting Saturday night in Kan- sas City between the Royals and the St. Louis Cardinals, who won the National League pennant earlier Wednesday by beating Los Angeles, 7- 5. THE ROYALS iced their comeback from a three games-to-one deficit when Sundberg drove in three runs with a bases-loaded triple off the top of the right field wall in the sixth in- ning. Thus ended Canada's hopes for the first World Series outside the United States. Meanwhile in Los Angeles Jack Clark, acquired in the offseason to put some power in a lineup built' on speed, hit a three-run home run with two out in the ninth inning to give St. Louis a 7- 5 victory over Los Angeles yesterday afternoon and send the Cardinals into their 14th World Series. Twice, the Cardinals fought back from deficits to beat the Dodgers in the sixth game of the National League playoffs. The Cardinals thus completed a four-game sweep of the Dodgers af- ter losing the first two games. "I'M NOT a hero or the reason why we are here," said Clark, who had gone without a home run since Sept.21 while missing a major portion of the final month of the season with a rib in- jury. "It's been the whole team all the way," Clark said, "our manager, Whitey Herzog, and our bullpen, Joaquin Andujar and John Tudor. They've kept us in ballgames, they kept us out of losing streaks." Ozzie Smith, who went 10-for-23 in the series with three RBI including the game-winning homer Monday, was voted aninimously as the Most Valuable Player of the playoffs. Smith also had an RBI triple to cap a three- run seventh inning yesterday as the Carindals tied the score 4-4. "We've battled all year, and today was an example of what you can do if you believe in yourself," Smith said. "and that's what these guys did all year." The Dodgers, who at one time led the game 4-1, broke the 4-4 tie with Mike Marshall's leadoff homer in the eighth inning. Then, facing reliever Tom Niedenfuer, the Cardinals star- ted their winning rally with one out in the ninth. Associated Press Jack Clark wallops a three run homer in the top of the ninth to give St. Louis a 7-5 win over Los Angeles and send the Cardinals to the World Series.
