HEALTH &he Michigan Daily -Wednesday, October 16,1985- Page 5 &FITNESS Students rush to research center for health tests - By JEFF WIDMAN The University of Michigan Fitness Research Center is gaining popularity as more students rush to have their body fat levels expertly tested, accor- ding to Carole Burkhardt, the center's director of testing. "The popularity of the fitness cen- ter has increased during the past few years with the increasing number of jdggers and weightlifters," Burkhardt said. 'LOCATED IN room 1040 of the Cen- tral Campus Recreation Building at 401 Washtenaw Avenue, the center also offers stress and blood tests. It charges a fee of $150 per test, and $180 for those who take all three tests. "Besides being a better deal, taking all three tests gives a person a better overall picture of the condition of his or her body," said Burkhardt. The body composition test is a measure of the percentage of fat in the body. The center tests this by submerging the body under water in a special process. Ideal body fat per- centages for males range from 10 to 17 percent, Berkhardt said. For femals, the range is from 12 to 21 percent. THE STRESS test varies with each I person, because not everyone has the same athletic capabilities, Berhardt said. The test includes measuring the heart rate and other vital signs during performance of such activities as jogging and weightlifting. .The blood test is done to measure levels of cholesterol in the blood- stream which can be an important in- Hig h cholesterol foods may be okay NEW YORK (UPI) - For decades doctors have urged people to cut down on cholesterol-rich meat, cheeses,.and eggs because the fatty alcohol sub- stance can build up on artery walls and lead to heart disease. Now some researchers say as many ' s 80 percent of all people can eat wholesterol-rich foods without harm because the body maintains a natural balance of cholesterol in the blood tream as long as the diet includes 9egetables and fiber. BUT EVEN if only 20 percent of the nation's population is affected by cholesterol in the food, "we' re still talking about 45 million people," said Dr. Virgil Brown, a professor of medicine at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York and consultant to the American Heart Association. "So really it is a good idea to cut down on those foods anyway," he paid. "It can't hurt you and it can possibly help you." Dr. Barbara O'Brien, who just csampleted a study on cholesterol at lexas A&M University, said the fatty ibaterial can either be made in the human body or absorbed through food digestion. ";':WHEN IT'S absorbed through food, the body's production decreases 'to compensate for it," she said. "The body maintains a balance of cholesterol in the system." In her experiment, O'Brien had 20 mnen add three eggs a day to their n'ormal diets for 12 weeks. Almost all of the men had no significant change i their blood cholesterol levels after the experiment, she said. 'O'Brien said her study confirms earlier studies by researchers at the University of Missouri and the *University of California at Los Angeles. "The American Heart Association has advised people for years to cut dawn on nutritious foods because they also contain cholesterol," she said. "they say limit yourself to three eggs a week but eggs can be very nutritious and economical." However, other doctors interviewed said Americans still eat too much cholesterol and said experiments like S)',Brien's are too "loosely struc- tured" for the results to be accepted unequivocally. Before a test is conducted, stomers must fill out a life analysis estionnaire, which includes a alth risk appraisal. This form gives e necessary background to the cen- r's staff so that they can design a st tailored to the individual. t1 "We find a higher consumption of caffeine in the average college student than we do in the rest of the people who come to the center," she notes. "This is apparent in the testing when we see premature heart beats." DON'T FADE AWAY' --- --. Berkhart said the center's testing is more precise than tests given by hospitals. She attributes this to the methods the center uses for the stress and body composition tests. "WE USE the underwater weighing technique, which is the most accurate test of a person's body fat," Berkhar- dt said. "We also take into con- sideration each individual body during the stess test. We are not going to administer the same test to a 65- year-old woman and a 20-year-old min. Each body has a different capacity." The center, which opened eight years ago, also administers special fitness tests on request.
