Yesterday at his weekly press luncheon Schembechler was told that the USA Today ranked his squad No. 1. "I don't read that paper," the veteran leader replied. eTHEN ANOTHER reporter told him the New York Times ranked Michigan No.1. "I don't get that paper either," he said laughingly. Indeed, the polls mean nothing to Schembechler, at least not right now. He seemed content with talking about the Iowa game. "We got some work to do on of- fense," he said. "We got an excep- tional attitude. We came out of the Michigan State game with nobody in- jured. We're going after one game at a time." Iowa coach Hayden Fry also made an appearance at the luncheon in the form of a teleconference call. He hoped his squad would not be ranked No. 1 going into Saturday's game. "At Iowa, we don't even know how to spell number one," he said. Fry spent the rest of the time praising Schembechler and the Wo- lverines. He definitely wasn't bragging about his defense, which had to replace nine starters this year (two lost to injuries, seven to graduation). "I'M OVERLY concerned about Michigan, period," he said. "They don't need any compliments from Iowa." Unlike the week before, Schem- bechler was less worried about the of- fensive line's status. "We're not going to make any changes in there," he said. "We'll take a look at (Mike) Husar Tuesday and find out if he can play. The rest of it, I don't see any change." Converted tackle Mike Krauss filled in for the injured Husar against MSU and ended up being named the game's offensive hustler. "Just a week ago we moved him from offensive tackle to guard to help us out, and he per- formed very well for us. He got in there and just whaled away." ANOTHER area where Schem- bechler saw improvement was the kicking and special teams. "I think it played a little better," he noted. "Monte (Robbins) kicked better and I think my placekickers were better. Our kickoff coverage has been good." Indeed, freshman placekicker Mike Gillette got better agianst MSU hit- ting a field goal and four extra points. He leads the team in scoring with 42 points. Two other freshmen - wideout John Kolesar andtight end Jeff Brown - have also impressed Schembechler. He said Kolesar will continue to start while Brown will play on short yardage situations as long as Paul Schmerger is out with a back injury. In addition to Krauss, the other champions of the week were announ- ced at the luncheon. PIZZA HUT Now accepting applications for Cooking and Waiting daytime and evening help. Smith hit the first left-handed home run of his career with one out in the ninth inning to give the Cards a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 5 of the National League playoffs. St. Louis now holds a 3-2 edge in games in the best-of-seven series. THE HOMER came on a 1-2 pitch from Tom Niedenfuer and was the first that the switch-hitting Smith has hit batting left-handed in 2,968 career at- bats. He had only six homers this season. Before Smith's dramatic homer, the two teams had played a 2-2 tie af- ter Bill Madlock's two-run home run for the Dodgers in the fourth inning. In and out of trouble, Dodger left- hander Fernando Valenzuela finally left after throwing 132 pitches through eight innings. GRIDDE PICKS The Cardinals' Vince Coleman may be a speed demon, but he couldn't beat the Daily's crack reporters in the long run. 'early Monday morning, Coleman was nailed hook-sliding into the Stud- ent Publications Building where a Griddes staff member persuaded him to talk. "Yeah, my leg's hurt," said Vince. "That's why you caught me." If he wins, Coleman gets to take another hike to claim his prescription of a Dooley's guest pass good for two and a full-tray Sicilian pizza, Chicago stuffed Pizza, or whole sub sandwich from Pizza Express. 1.
