"HE'LL BE consistent through the whole season," said Spartan head coach George Perles. "He'll have a lot of good days, and he's off to one of the best starts of any Spartan running back ever." "He's a great back," agreed Michigan head coach Bo Schem- bechler. "He proved it a year ago, and he's off to a great start this year." White had been carrying the team, but quarterback Bobby McAllister came out of his offensive shell last week with an 18 for 27 performance, good for 275 yards against Iowa. Besides the improved statistics, the freshman who took over for injured starter Dave Yarema three weeks ago demonstrated the poise needed to lead his team's offense. IN FACT, even though Yarema may be ready to play this week, McAllister will start and is the .only quarterback for which Schembechler is prepared. "He's always had that notential." commented the Michigan coach. "It doesn't take much to improve when you're good. He just had one or two bad plays going, and it helped when he came out and hit them right away (last week)." "I'm glad to see Bobby McAllister finally show the things he's capable of doing," agreed Perles. FOR MICHIGAN the offense con- tinues to demonstrate it's ability to grind out the long drives that produce winning football. After going seven for 17 against Notre Dame in the opening game, quarterback Jim Har- baugh has completed 43 of 64 passes (71.7 pct.). To complement Harbaugh's ef- ficient passing has been a productive running game led by tailback Jamie Morris. Morris has rushed for 383 yards on 84 carries for a 4.6 average, including 96 a week ago against Wisconsin. Far from being a one man show, though, Morris has received plenty of help from his backfield companions. Thomas Wilcher has scampered for 223 yards with his world class speed, and Harbaugh and Gerald White have chipped in with 148 and 118 yards, respectively. SCHEMBECHLER is satisfied with his backfield. Receivers Paul Jokisch and Eric Kattus have also played well, so the main area of concern con- tinues to lie in the offensive line. "Our problem has been constant in- juries inside," said Schembechler. "It's hard when you can't keep your line intact." This week's missing piece on the line could be guard Mike Husar. For the third week in a row, the 6-3, 278- pound sophomore was injured, this time a slightly sprained ankle that has left him- questionable for Saturday's game. With Husar an uncertainty, John Vitale will see extensive action for the second week in a row, as will Andy Borowski. In addition,Bob Tabachino may see action at guard rather than his usual center spot. Schembechler has confidence in his offense, but he doesn't underestimate the MSU defense. "Their defense has not played a bad game," he .said. They're excellent. They're real quick, well coached, and they know what they are doing. They're probably the quickest defense we've faced." 4 ~ 7 -, / <' Daily Photo by DAN HABIB Sophomore tailback Jamie Morris scampers through a hole two weeks ago against Maryland. Both are hosting their first meet in over two and a half years. The Michigan Invitational is being held in conjunction with the Big Ten Championships which Michigan will also host on November 2nd because of an NCAA rule which requires any school that has the conference cham- pionships to hold an earlier meet, to allow the other conference teams to see and run on the course.
