Page 6 - The Michigan Daily - Friday, October 4, 1985 Greeks membership may reach al (Continued from Page 1) "THE BASIC THING about the Greek system is the 'niche' aspect - the support of sisters and brothers getting through four traumatic years," Glanzman says. Jack Levin, a sociologist at Nor- theastern University in California who last year completed a major study of the Greek system, offers another theory: "They're back for the same reason that the junior prom is back, that Ronald Reagan is president, that there's a religious revival and a rebir- th of patriotism." WHATEVER the reason, the pen- dulum has indeed swung back from the days when members of Greek societies were condemned for following their parents and for con- forming with sacred rituals and philanthropic activities. In the manner of generations of Greeks before them, Lutes says fraternity men still swallow goldfish on occasion and keep alive a "playful rivalry" between pledges and active members. But he adds that in today's Greek societies one won't "find as many religious, racial, and financial barriers as you may have found in the last 'successful' period of frater- nities." "I WOULD LIKE to see people realize the positive aspects of the fraternity system instead of dwelling on the few negative events," Lutes says, insisting that laws against hazing are obeyed despite tales to the contrary. The recent history of the Greek system here isn't tarnished by punishments for incidents of privations and humiliations, but all- male societies on other campuses haven't been so lucky. From the University of Vermont to California State University at Fuller- ton, charges of hazing, racism, and sexism, and potentially deadly initiations have impatient college administrators clamping down on Greeks, and in some cases, banning fraternities from campus. DISCIPLINE problems at Amherst, including numerous incidents of van- dalism and sexism, prompted its trustees to abolish the liberal arts school's 148-year Greek tradition. More than one third of the campus population was Greek. But there have been worse cases. Much worse. The morning after an initiation par- ty at the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity at Tennessee State University, a 20- year-old member was found dead with five times the amount of alcohol in his blood to make him legally drunk. "You know, a lot of this is done as sort of a shared misery thing," Jonathan Razee, a Pepperdine University student, said of the more bizarre pledge rites. "Frats figure if we're all miserable together, we'll l4ime high always stay best friends." But that rationale lost a lot of credence a t the February 19184 American International College Oin Springfield, Mass., where pledes were instructed to gorge themsel'es with spaghetti and wine, vomit, the eat and drink some more. A Zeta Chi pledge died from this form of shared misery. STUDENTS TELEPHONE ANSWERING for ONL Y $7. S0 month - 24 hours every day.
