The meet will be the Wolverines' final step in preparing for the up- coming Big Ten season. Last week, they finished fourth at the Missouri Invitational. THE TEAM is looking to improve on last year's fourth place finish in the Canadian meet. Head coach Parks said that while it will be tough to beat out the Canadian all-star team that will participate, she hopes that her charges can outrun the other college teams. The toughest competition should come from Penn State, Kent State and Western Ontario. Senior runner Cathy Schmidt believes the team can beat everyone but the all stars. She said, "I dlon't think the cornpetiton will be as tough as last week. If we run as good as we did last week, we could win it." Parks, in her second year as coach, views these first two meets as preparation for the all important Bi2 Ten race where the Wolverines will chase defending national champion Wisconsin and conference runner up Illinois. " I think we have an outside chance to win," said Parks. "But we're using this more as a tune up for when we face the Big Ten teams next week in Indiana." The Wolverines want to be fully prepared for their next two meets, the Indiana Invitational and the Michigan Thompson ..adds to 'M' attack high in the Big Ten." MICHIGAN IS blessed to have its top runners, but- it will take a total team effort for them to run cornpetit- ively in the Big Ten. Kelli Bert beleves the runners have the team to reallyrclose, hsaid Bert "We have a lot of depth." The team will be in need of that dep- th the next few weeks because Sch- midt is out with a leg injury and will definitely miss this Saturday's meet. Parks is optimistic that Schmidt will be back soon. "WE'RE GOING to hold her out of this week's meet in hopes that she'll be able to come back strong against the other Big Ten teams," she said. Schmidt hopes to be back by next week, although she doesn't feel com- fortable running yet. Nonetheless, her return will be a big boost for the Wolverines. "If we get Cathy back, we have the potential to beat Illinois," noted Parks. -The harriers will have to keep on improving every week in order to cat- ch up to the best of the Big Ten and they know they'll have an advantage when it comes time for the Big Ten Championships because they will be held on Michigan's home course. As Schmidt says, "If we have a good day, we can beat Illinois. Everyone will have to do really well." If these early meets can properly prepare the team, last year's third cance to sprint by Illinois into second and possibly come into the sight of Wisconsin. Schroeder came in second place last weekend and has a chance to win the Big Ten title this year. After Schroeder, the team will look for big contributions from Kelli Bert and Melissa Thompson. Bert finished 15th last weekend and has been a pleasant surprise for Parks. Thom- pson, who didn't run cross country in high school, has also brought a smile to Park's face. this year, said P arks. "She's pretty inexperienced, but she had a good summer of training and could place Oklahoma (0-0) at Minnesota (2-0) The second ranked Sooners finally begin a season of high ex- pectations at the Hubert H. A 20-footer kissed the net. The battle-worn features of Spencer Haywood smiled broadly. Newly-acquired Piston Rick Mahorn swore as the 36-year-old University of Detroit graduate kept pouring it on. Pistons coach Chuck Daly called the two big men over, wondering how the grizzled veteran could be outplaying his younger teammate.. "What's wrong, Rick?" he asked. "That old bleep can still p1 ay coach! He's too good for me!"I "What?" "He can play Griddes, I mean." So it was true. Spence had returned from the middle-aged land of yoga and real-estate development to star in Ann Arbor's youthful pastime. His comeback was complete. We can't guarantee a professional tryout or a cure for yogamania, but the Griddes winner will receive a Dooley's guest pass good for two plus a Pizza Express full-tray Sicilian piz- za, Chicago stuffed pizza or whole sub sandwich.
