4 Field Hockey vs. Michigan State Sunday,11 a.m. Ferry Field SPORTS IM Football Registration Deadlines October 2-4 IM Building The Michigan Daily Thursday, September 26, 1985 Pae 6 i Gelbaugh to test Blue 'D' i By PHIL NUSSEL Brigham Young, Purdue, Notre Dame...whenever these three teams are discussed, quarterbacks are discussed. All three schools have rich quarterback traditions. Brigham Young produced Steve Young, Purdue produced Bob Griese, and Notre Dame put out Joe Montana. A new entry to this elite group of quarterback schools is Maryland. Af- ter developing Boomer Esiason (now a starter for the Cincinatti Bengals) and Frank Reich (now with the Buf- falo Bills), the latest upcoming Terrapin helmsman is Stan Gelbaugh. BUT THE situation is a little dif- ferent for Gelbaugh than it was for his standout predecessors. This year, the Terps have become more run- oriented, and there are four good reasons: Rick Badanjek, Tommy Neal, Alvin Blount, and Stephon Scriber. All four running backs have already gained over 100 yards this season (Badanjek leads with 219), and all average over four yards a carry. So where does this leave Gelbaugh? His job is easier, for one thing. "It's nice, they take a lot of pressure off," said Gelbaugh. "We've got four run- ning backs who play all the time and they take a lot of the weight off." WITH A STRONG running game, Gelbaugh has strictly been a passer. "Our offense isn't really designed for He got off to a slow start this season, but came to life in the Terps' 28-0 drubbing of West Virginia Saturday night, completing 15 of 23 aerials for 263 yards. On the year, Gelbaugh has hit 36 of 76 passes for 504 yards along with three touchdowns and three intercep- tions. The 6-3, 207-pound senior started five games last fall after Reich was in- jured. HIS FIRST college start, though, probably made the rest of his career anticlimactic. He opened against Penn State and set a single-game school record with 48 total passes, competing 22 for 308 yards in the losing effort. He ended '84 with 1123 yards and five touchdowns. Gelbaugh was tabbed as this season's top Terp quarterback even before the squad's spring drills - not bad considering he was a wide receiver in the '84 spring drills. But he hasn't felt the pressure that some starters feel. He is secure at his spot. "I don't think I have anything to prove," he said. "There's nothing really left to prove. I'm just trying to play as well as I can so we can win." WHILE PLAYING in the shadows of standouts like Esiason and Reich can add to the pressure, it has also been a help to Gelbaugh. He learned from his predecessors. "I think the first thing that helped me was playing behind guys like Esiason and Reich," Gelbaugh said. "Other guys on our team, too, just set good examples of how to work hard. Plus our coaches are really good here." Gelbaugh said his favorite receiver is "Ziz" also known as Azizuddin Ab- dur-Ra'off. Ziz has caught 13 passes for 223 yards including a 39-yard reception, the longest Terp reception of the year. "He's been getting open a lot this year," Gelbaugh explained. "I haven't been trying to force it (to him). A lot of teams we've been playing have been rolling their coverage weak to stop our running game. Yeah, he's probably my favorite receiver, but we got a lot of good receivers on this team." Good receivers and good running backs - how can Gelbaugh lose? It will be tough. This Maryland quarter- back may not be another Esiason or Reich, but Gelbaugh may be good enough to lead his team to a banner year. - and be talked about at the same time. A Gelbaugh ...nothing to prove 4 the quarterback to run a lot," he said. "We got three great running backs, I don't need to be doing any running." The Carlisle, Pa. native is a drop- back, play action style quarterback. Pay i99 "SP" ".'"". .".' ' . " Y. . . . . . .. Niekro, 1-1 since coming to the Yankees from Houston on Sept. 12 to join his brother Phil, allowed four hits in five innings' work before being forced to leave with a bruished right shin. THE VICTORY was his first in the American League since July 30, 1972 when he was with Detroit and came the day after Phil made a third unsuccessful attempt at career victory No. 300. Mattingly had three hits, including his homer in the six- th inning, and scored three times as he raised his major- league leading RBI total to 135. Mattingly's second hit, a double, was his 47th of the season, the most by a Yankee since Lou Gehrig had 47 in 1928. RICKEY Henderson had three hits, one RBI, scored four times and stole his 75th base of the season, breaking the Yankees team record of 74 set by Fritz Maisel in 1914. The Yankees got one run of Jack Morris, 1-11, in the first inning on Dave Winfield's RBI double, scoring mattingly, then got three more in the third. Henderson started the third with a single and stole second. Ken Griffey walked, and Mattingly drove in two with a double into theleft-field corner. One out later, Mat- tingly scored on a single by Ron Hassey. The Yankees made it 5-1 in the fourth on Ken Griffey's RBI triple. Henderson's second double of the game chased Morris and scored the first of three sixth-inning runs. Mattingly followed with his 31st homer of the season, for two more runs, off Bill Scherrer. ,.
