MARTIAL ARTS RM. Mon. & Thurs. 7 - 8 p.m. Info: 763-1313 $15/month r By KYSA CONNETT Increasing numbers of University students are turning to aerobics dance classes for the total workout that it provides, as well as just for the fun of it, local instructors say. Central Campus Recreation Building officals say aerobics classes are more popular than any other fit- ness classes they offer. "THIS IS the biggest fall we've had, and there are only a few spots left in the classes," said Pat Van Volkin- burg, an administrative assistant to the CCRB's aerobics program. "People thought fitness was a craze, well maybe it's not a craze," she said. "I think that people might feel that taking care of themselves is not just a craze but a good lifestyle. I'm hoping that's what it is. "It gives you energy for the rest of the day - at least it gives me energy for the day," said Van Volkinburg. Because aerobics involves shaping up to the beat of top-40 hits, and can be a lot of fun, students ae easily motivated to continue with it, Nick added. ONE OF the . best fitness aspects of aerobics, however, is the potential it offers to improve the cardiovascular system. Most classes follow a general activity pattern that includes: 10 minutes of warm-up, 20 minutes of active hop-step dancing to speed up the heart beat, 20 minutes of calisthenics, and a 10 minute warm- down stretch. The active dance part of the routine increases a person's heart rate from a resting pulse, which for students should be around 60-90 minutes per beat, to a working pulse of around 130- 160 beats per minute, Nick said. The 15-20 minute duration of the hop-step dancing is the time needed to be of benefit to the cardiovascular system, anything less wouldn't have as much effect, Van Volkinburg said. STRETCHING exercises done before and after a workout are a crucial part of the aerobics dance class routine, and an aspect of con- ditioning that many people neglect when they exercise on their own, in- structors say. Calisthenics, another essential part of the aerobics routine, improve muscle tone, turning flab into attrac- tive bulges, they say. "In college, it's easy to blow it (exercise) off and sit around and eat," said UAC's Nick. "I think aerobics class is a balance to late night snacking." Karen Pica and Bhargaui Gali, both LSA sophomores in charge of the program at Mary Markley Hall, say they have added more sit-ups and leg exercises in their aerobics routines because these exercises work on the areas people worry about the most - the stomach and thighs. Aerobics classes are opening up now across campus. Those offered by the CCRB come in a 13 week package for $20 and enrollment began Sept. 94n 3050 CCRB. All of these classes are taught by graduate students majoring in exercise physiology and are held two times a week for 50 minutes. THIS WEEK'S SPECIALS - . .
