4 Page 8-The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, September 24, 1985 Clock and Bo ticked off Daily Photo by MATT PETRIE' Bo Schembechler and quarterback Jim Harbaugh hope to duplicate last weekend's performance this Saturday against Maryland. WE GET IT FREE, 9ug By MIKE REDSTONE A jubilant and quick-witted Bo Schembechler spent most of his weekly football luncheon discussing the intricacies of playing a football game with a bunch of Southern in- dependent officials. In doing so, Schembechler poked fun at the head official, who flagged the Wolverines 13 times for 107 yards during Saturday's 34-3 triumph. BO'S BIG beef against the head of- ficial was that the 25-second clock was repeatedly being turned on too soon. This prevented Michigan players from going into motion, resulting in several delay penalties. "I've never seen anything like that (the officiating) as long as I've been around," said the '23rd-year coach. "That guy (the head official) was ridiculous. He took us completely out of our offense. He took them (South Carolina) out too. "He was so dumb he didn't even know he did it. He thought he was so slick." SCHEMBECHLER went on to praise most of his offensive and defensive units, but emphasized his feeling that next weekend's game against Maryland will be the toughest test for his Wolverines so far this year. "We're not good enough yet. Run- ning, passing, defense, kicking - we've got to get better. We know that," said Schembechler. "The defense is going to come under a tremendous assault this week. They'll be put to the test against Maryland, but they'll respond." Although Schembechler would not specify which line he was more pleased with so far this year, he did say that there was "no comparison" regarding the improvement of this year's offensive line over last season's. ONE PROBLEM which Schem- bechler addressed specifically was the fact that he would like to get his flankers more involved in the offen- sive scheme. "I've got to get more production out of the flanker," said Schembechler, who was pleased with Paul Jokisch's afternoon (five receptions for 115 yar- ds). "They've been missing some reads." -With Erik Campbell still sidelined with a separated shoulder, Schem- bechler will be experimenting with his punt returning specialists. Freshman John Kolesar, 6-0, 190, could see some action at that position against Maryland. -Linebacker Mike Mallory, a pre- season All-America selection, is still listed as questionable for the Maryland game after suffering a pulled hamstring against Notre Dame. -Bob Tabachino should be back to practice by this afternoon, according to Schembechler. The 6-1, 263 pound offensive guard strained a muscle during pre-game warmups against South Carolina and saw limited action in that game. 4 Offense and defense both greatly praised' Mallory and Tabachino ... should be ready this weekend UPI Top Twenty Michigan's first 2-0 start since 1978 is starting to pay dividends in the college football polls. The Wolverines, with 250 points, jumped from 15th to ninth in the UPI rankings. The last time Michigan cracked the Top Ten was after last year's upset victory over Miami (Fla.) in the season opener. The gridders are also ranked 11th in the USA Today/CNN and ESPN polls. Last week's foe, South Carolina (2- 1), fell out of the Top Twenty after previously ranked 11th, and Saturday's opponent, Maryland (2-1), is ranked 15th. What's a baseball season without an Billy Martin controversy? First it was Reggie Jackson who tried to bring the on-again, off-again Yankee skipper to his senses. Then a marshmallow salesman from Duluth attempted to right Billy's ways. But it took pitcher Ed Whitson to finally convince Martin to play Griddes. "Steinbrenner plays Griddes," Billy was heard yelling in a Baltimore bar Saturday night. "That's reason enough for me to avoid it." Whitson and several bar patrons calmly tried to persuade the cranky Yankee of the merits of Griddes - the choice of full-tray Sicilian pizza or Chicago stuffed pizza or whole sub- inarine sandwich that goes to the winner. And when they described the joy that one can experience when in possession of a Dooley guest pass, good for two, Martin was almost won over. XC.: But Whitson made a near-fatal mistake. As a parting comment, he said, "Earl Weaver plays every week," at which point Martin went berserk, and started punching "doh- gies" and anyone else who got in his way. When the dust settled, Whitson and Martin were spotted in the corner of the saloon. Whitson held Martin's arm behind his back, and twisted it until it broke. "Now will you play Griddes?" Whitson screamed. "Just this once," said Martin. The American League office has requested that we keep Billy's picks private, but we can report that he took a special interest in Game 15. 1.
