4 Page 6 - The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, September 24, 1985 Protesters believe actions art By NANCY DRISCOLL While eating pizza and drinking beer in an upstairs room at Dominicks, about 30 people discussed last night their reasons for demon- strating at Congressman Carl Pur- cell's (R-Second District) office. The group was talkative, cheefrul, and pleased with the resulting arrests. "I FEEL like I did something that was in solidarity with the Nicaraguan people," said Bill Gladstone, a sophomore in the Residential College. "We committed a criminal offense today, but I don't think it's anything compared to the criminal offenses committed by the U.S. government in El Salvador. I don't think trespassing is anything compared to murder," he said. Peter Rosset, a Biology TA, who lived in Nicaragua from 1982 to 1984 was among those arrested at Congressman Purcell's office. "I'm upset that I had to be arrested for Purcell to hear what we're saying, but given that he wouldn't listen other- wise, then I'm glad I was arrested." Don Coleman, a minister at Guild ?justified House said that his recent visit to El Salvador inspired him to protest. "For me, it (the trespassing) was an important act. I simply can no longer stand by and watch our government involved in the killing in El Salvador after visiting the Church people there." "THE REASON we all got arrested is to publicize the bombing of El Salvador. Congressman Purcell con- tinues to support the death and suf- fering in that country," stated Chris Faber, a senior in LSA. Namita Sharma, a senior in Natural Resources, chose to be a supporter and was not arrested. "As you see your friends being carried out and dragged out by the Police, you really begin to feel the effect and it brings a tremendous amount of solidarity. The people are making a drastic choice to try and make an impression and bring the issue to the attention of the public and the media." Although no specific actions are planned by the group at Purcell's of- fice, Dean Baker, an Economics TA said, "We'll be back there again, maybe not tomorrow, but we'll be, back there. Daily photog arrested (Continued from Page 1) police arrived at the scene. THE POLICE arrested Habib even after he showed an office his presg credentials, Habib said. "I was angry, at first, that I couldn't reason with them," Habib said, "they wouldn't listen to me." Another photographer from the Ann : Arbor news who was also covering the sit-in did not get arrested. "I wondered why they didn't arrest the Ann Arbor News photographer. I feel like they singled me out," Habib Y 4said. Daily Editor-In-Chief Neil Chase said the police should not have; arrested Habib. "If the police can arrest a reporter, or photographer, they can censor the' news. And that's unconstitutional,": Chase said. Chase said the newspaper has not decided whether it will pursue any- legal action.
