4 Page 10 -The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, September 18, 1985 Blue opposition will get Hammer-ed By BRAD MORGAN Mike Hammerstein is known as "The Hammer" to his teammates on the Michigan football team, but after Saturday's 20-12 victory over Notre Dame, it's obvious the name is more than just a play on the defensive stan- dout's name.- The senior tackle accounted for 13 tackles against the Irish, including four for 24 yards in losses and three sacks of Notre Dame quarterback Steve Beuerlein good for -22 yards. In a prickly Michigan defensive effort, Hammerstein was the biggest thorn in the Irish's side. "DOMINANT...,"said head coach Bo Schembechler. "He was just like you saw him, dominant." With his strong performance again- st Notre Dame, Hammerstein finally stepped out of the imposing shadow of Kevin Brooks. Brooks earned All-Big Ten status at defensive tackle last season, and Hammerstein's play behind him was often lost in the shuf- fle. "A year ago, Brooks made all the big plays," said Schembechler, "and people forgot about Hammerstein. But, he can be a big play lineman, he's got that kind of ability. He's smart." Throughout his career at Michigan, the elder half of Michigan's Hammer- stein duo (brother Mark is a starting offensive guard) had been plagued by weight problems - he didn't have enough. Up to 264 this year, he has ap- parently beaten that problem while retaining the speed that makes a tackle effective. "We try to out-quick offensive teams," Hammerstein noted. "That's basically our defensive philosophy." Hammerstein's own quickness showed in his ability to consistently beat the Notre Dame offensive line and work into the Irish backfield. The senior from Ohio constantly seemed to be in Beuerlein's face. "Mike played hard, as he always does, but his productivity behind the line of scrimmage was absolutely tremen- dous," commented Schembechler. "He dominated his side of the defensive line in a manner we haven't seen in quite some time." Quickness helped on the rush, but Hammerstein didn't underestimate the value of a strong secondary in aiding a defensive line's attack. "We have a lot of confidence (on the line) in our secondary," he said. "We try to rush and get the sack and break a quarterback out of his rhythm, and a good secondary lets the line rush harder." Schembechler expects more out of the man he calls "the most un- derrated tackle in the league" than good line play, though . He expects leadership. As the only returning lineman with any significant amount of playing time, his experience is in- valuable. "Being the only veteran on the line, Mike's play (against Notre Dame) was critical," said the head coach. "We are looking for that kind of leadership for the rest of the season." If he gets it, Michigan's opponents better watch for the Hammer to fall all season. UPI Top Twenty OEM CLASSIFIED CLASSICS PRESENTS... DORM DOINGS. SEPT. 6.30 ANNOUNCE PARTIES & SPECIAL EVENTS.
