HEALTH &

R

By JAMIE DIAMOND
and KATHRYN GEOLY
Starting this semester, students will
be able to get academic credit while
they learn how to better utilize
University Health Services and take
care of their bodies through a new
"Personal Health and Wellness"
course.
Patterned after the Peer Health

Program offered last year at Mosher
Jordan, Judith Daniels and Kathleen
Rose, assistant directors of Univer-
sity Health Services, had been
pushing for the course for the past two
years. This year, they were finally
able to obtain sponsorship from the
School of Nursing, which is interested
in seeing more non-nursing students
learn the value of good health, they

said.
UNIVERSITY Health Services
Director, Caesar Briefer, will act as a
consultant for the course developed
by the two registered nurses.
So far 54 students have signed up for
the class, but it can potentially hold a
total of 90 students, Daniels said.
Although the two credit class has
already begun, enrollment is open un-

til Sept. 25.
Focused around a variety of student
health issues, each week a new topic
will be explored by a guest lecturer.
Requirements for the class are no dif-
ferent than any other University class
and there will be a midterm as well as
a final exam, Daniels said.
IN ADDITION to assigned readings
from a coursepack, students will draw

on material from Take Care of Your-
self: A Consumer's Guide to Medical
Care by David Vickery and James
Fries.
The class lectures will address
health problems unique to student
life, said Daniels. "You have to work
hard to stay healthy in this environ-
ment," she said. "With all the
pressures associated with academic
life, students tend to get little sleep,
poor nutrition, and inadequate exer-
cise."
Daniels said the best advice she can
give to students to combat these
problems is to get a good amount of
rest, exercise, and eat well balanced
meals. It is especially important for
each person to find an outlet to
alleviate stress, such as exercise,
community activities or art work, she
said.
ANOTHER goal of the course is to
make students into wise consumers of
the health care services available on
campus, Daniels said. Both Daniels
and Briefer say that students often
misuse University Health Services.
"Our perception, having provided

health care throughout the years, is
that students come to us seeking
medical care for physical problems
which they could take care of them-
selves," said Daniels.
Explains Briefer: "A cold is a cold.
and it will go away in a week. No one
can cure it."
ROSE WILL lecture on how studen-
ts can choose a form of contraception
that fits their body as well as their
personal set of ethics.
Rose said she feels many students
are naive when it comes to methods of
birth control. "There are people who
aren't aware of the risks and benefits -
of contraception," she said.
Another lecture dealing with sexuality
will attempt to aid students in sorting
out their own values and coping in a
situation where their own values con-
flict with those of significant others,
Rose said.
Substance abuse and suicide
prevention will also be topics for lec-
ture and discussion. The class meets '.
from 11 a.m. to noon in West
Engineering.
