The Michigan Daily Monday, September 16, 1985 Page ......... ......... . LIONS AND TIGERS AND BEARS, OH MY: Lions do Dallas, 26-21 . PONTIAC (AP) - Eric Hipple passed for one touchdown and ran for another while a fired-up Detroit defense forced five Dallas turnovers yesterday as the Lions held off the Cowboys for a 26-21 National Football League victory. It was the Lion's second straight triumph under first-year Coach Darryl Rogers. Hipple, who completed 10 of 23 passes for 141 yards, flipped a 21-yard scoring strike to Jeff Chadwick at 4:24 of the first quarter and ran one yard for a TD at 2:33 of the third quarter. James Jones scored the Lions' other touchdown at 2:59 of the third quarter. Eddie Murray kicked field goals of 34 and 46 yards, completing the Lions' scoring. The Cowboys, who appeared flat af- ter their emotional victory over Washington last Monday night, didn't score until the fourth quarter when' Gary Hogeboom came on for injured quarterback Danny White. Tigers 4, Orioles 1 DETROIT (AP) - Barbaro Garbey broke an eighth-inning tie when he scored from second on Cal Ripken's two-out throwing error, then Lance Parrish added a two-run single as the Detroit Tigers beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-1 yesterday. Garbey, pinch-running, was on second when Alan Trammell hit a routine grounder to shortstop. Ripken threw wildly over the head of first baseman Eddie Murray, sending., Lou Whitaker to third and Trammell to second. Kirk Gibson was intentionally walked and Parrish followed with his single. Willie Hernandez, 8-9, was the win- ning pitcher in relief of Jack Morris. Sammy Stewart, 5-5, suffered the defeat. Bears 20, Patriots 7 CHICAGO (AP) - Middle linebacker Mike Singletary, leading a ferocious defense, registered three sacks and intercepted a pass yester- day, firing the Chicago Bears to a 20-7 victory over New England in a National Football League game. The triumph was the second straight for the Bears, while New England fell to 1-1. The Patriots were able to cross into Bear territory only once until Tony Eason hit Craig James with a 90-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Jim McMahon threw a 32-yard pass to Dennis McKinnon for a touchdown on the Bears' first possession and set up another with a 43-yard pass to Willie Gault before leaving the game with a stiff neck. 4 'U Associated Press. SPORTS OF THE DAILY: 4 Irish nip stiker,- By DOUG VOLAN After a season-opening 1-0 loss to Notre Dame yesterday, the field hockey team might appear ready to repeat last year's dismal season, in which the stickers managed just 14 goals in 19 games. There is plenty of reason to be op- timistic however, because manhan- dled the Irish in the ever important statistic of shots on goal, 14-6. This shows that Michigan played well defensively, according to coach Karen Collins, who was particularly impressed with the play of mid- fielders Joan Taylor, Jane Nixon and Debbie Devine. The Stickers applied a lot of pressure, but just could not get the ball in the cage. Collins said the main problem is "an inexperienced front line." Despite that, Collins feels this year's squad is better than last year's. "Once they click in the circle, .they're going to be great," she said. After a scoreless first half, Notre Dame broke through with a goal eight minutes into the second half. Benet DeBerry of Notre Dame took a pass from teammate Regina Degman and slapped one past Michigan goalie Maryann Bell. Linksters stroke to second It wasn't just the Michigan football team getting into the swing of things last weekend. Coach Sue LeClair's women golfers drove their way to a second-place. finish in a six-team match at Ferris,4 State College Friday and Saturday. An enthusiastic LeClair called the second-place finish "a first ever" for the lady linksters after finishing next- to-last in the same tournament last year. Leading the way for the Wolverines were juniors Jan Idomir, who placed third overall with rounds of 78-80-79, and Perri Mage, who carded a 76 for Michigan's low tournament round on the Catke Golf Course in Big Rapids. - JERRY MUTH .
