Page 8 - The Michigan Daily - Friday, September 13, 1985 Accidents cause many Peace Corps deaths 4 CHICAGO (AP)-Motorcycle ac- cidents and suicide killed more young Peace Corps volunteers during a recent seven-year period than the tropical diseases that plague the Third World, a new study says. The study, published in today's Journal of the American Medical Association, suggest the Peace Corps should shift its concern for volunteers from exotic diseases to accident prevention. Dr. Stephen Hargarten, a specialist in emergency medicine, conducted the study from 1961 to 1983. FOR VOLUNTEERS between the ages of 20 and 29, suicides and motor- cycle accidents were the leading causes of death from 1977 to 1983, ac- counting for 13 of 34 fatalities in that group, the study said. Ron DeFore, a Peace Corps spokesman, said the agency already had altered some of its training procedures. "Some of the problems, there may not be any solution for," DeFore said in a telephone interview Wednesday from Washington. "FOR EXAMPLE, in some rural areas there are all sorts of wild animals that can cross these roads, and unless you're going extremely slow, you can come close to or hit some of them," DeFore said. "What's more important, fencing in a road or developing a country's agricultural production?" He also said the Peace Corps was working to reduce the number of suicides through screening and coun- seling. The Peace Corps is attempting to confront that problem, DeFore said. The Peace Corps, created in 1961 by the Kennedy administration to assist developing nations, has about 6,000 people in the field, down from a high of about 15,000 in 1966. DeFore said the rising number of suicides among young volunteers was particularly troubling because the proportion ,,f volunteers 20 to 29 years old is increasing-from 57 percent of the Peace Corps in 1978 to 79 percent in 1983. There were seven suicides in that age group between 1977 and 1983. "In the early years of the Peace Corps, there were no reported cases of suicide," Hargarten said. "That is now the second most frequent cause of death" for that age group, after vehicle accidents. DeFore and Hargarten agree that, despite increased emphasis on vehicle safety, some safety measures must be taken by developing nations. 'I 1 CLASSIFIED CLASSICS PRESENTS... I DORM DOINGS.'
