The exception here is that some of the groups - Los Lobos, The Long Riders, Cruzados - are bands significantly more notable than the one-hit wonders who usually populate this kind of release. Even then though, this is a disappointingly un- memorable release, because most of the material isn't all that interesting. The Los Lobos contribution, for example, is just one of their very pret- ty but typical Mexican folk ballads, while the two cuts by Cruzados - once known as L.A.'s legendary The Plugz - are surprisingly bloodless ditties Sseemingly tailored to crack the AOR arket. The better of their two cuts, "Just Like Roses," features some nicely styled Morricone-like guitar arrangements that are hindered by forgettable lyrics and bombastic production that make the song sound like little more than a Southern-fried version of "Don't You (Forget About Me)." Album filler is provided with two innocuous ditties by The Textones - emember the Textones, any one? - and Gail Davies, while the one reasonably interesting cut is The Long Riders' "Timeless Love," a fairly standard but affectingly ren- dered electric western ballad. The album gets high marks for trying to score a little higher than most of the rest of the rat pack, but low grades for falling too short of its goal. -Byron L.
