This fall, Jan Kralovec moved into room G104 of South Quad to take on a position as the University's alcohol- health-educator. She will train residence staff, put on programs in the dorms, and consult with various other student and University groups. The new position is the outgrowth of a 1984 alcohol task force report that recommended the University do more to educate students on substance abuse, she said. According to figures cited in the report, "it is highly likely that 15 to 20 percent of the traditionally-aged student population is experiencing a serious problem with the use of alcohol." Sho Mic Kralovec is no stranger to Univer- sity life. She completed both her un- dergraduate and graduate work here and holds a bachelor's degree in public health and a master's degree in adult and community health education. Although her position was initially intended to be focused solely on alcohol education, it was later broadened to include other general issues relating to healt such as diet and birth control because of a per- ceived interest among students, Kralovec said. Students of the '80s are taking more of an interest in striving for good health, said Kralovec. "Young people are taking a lot of in- terest in their health because of the "me-generation" that was an outgrowth of the '60s, when students became less interested in the rest of the world and more interested in themselves," she said. While students may be more willing to learn about how to go on a diet, Kralovec said she will be devoting most of her time to educating students about alcohol. "To talk about alcohol is not a very popular subject," she said. "Students usually assume anyone coming to talk to them about alcohol will basically say, 'Don't drink.' That is definitely not my purpose," said Kralovec, "but it is difficult to con- vince people otherwise." "My focus is on helping students to make responsible decisions on drinking," Kralovec said. "Alcohol and drug abuse is part of the college experience, and students don't want anyone to interfere with it" Before the task force was created, "alcohol education deserved atten- tion, but nothing had ever been done at this University," Kralovec said. "The University is behind many other schools in its education efforts," which, she said, underlines the need for more research and programming in the residence halls. In addition to Kralovec, an alcohol task force formed last year continues to coordinate efforts between various University organizations, such as counseling, health services, housing, and the Campus Information Center, Kralovec said. The combined efforts of the task force and the new alcohol- health educator should "give us a bet- ter picture of alcohol use on campus," she said. Today Kralovec plans to meet with housing officials and students to discuss the use of beer kegs in Univer- sity residence halls. Currently the, policy varies from dorm to drom. Although she doesn't believe a policy decision will be made at today's meeting, Kralovec said kegs "probably won't be allowed in any (residence) halls or will be allowed in all of them." She added it is likely that there will be a ban on kegs in the residence halls. w how you feel with ... higan Daily Personals 764-0557 mommommmmmmmoNq THIS r W WEEK'S SPECIALS at H TE MARKET , RESEARCH Shedding light on birth defects.
