B Best News" 0 , + f Best Business I As easy as it is to become so engrossed in our studies that we become cut off from the outside world, the abundance of campus news is constant reminder that reality is only afew years away. This past year was no excep- tion. Here are a few of the more important (and not-so-important) events that took place in and around the University over the past eight months as chosen by afew of the Daily's top editors. Best Campaign Stop With only a few weeks left in the 1984 presidential race, Democratic can- didate Walter Mondale made a Tuesday afternoon appearance on the Diag. Accompanied by his former rival, Sen. Gary Hart (D. -Colo.), Mondale was greeted by thousands of people at the rally which was probably as well at- tended as a Michigan-Ohio State foot- ball game. Though the former vice president's stay was brief, he managed to attract Democrats and Republicans alike, tur- ning the campus into a giant media ex- travaganza. "The way I look at it," Mondale said, "anybody who wants to be president should come to the University of Michigan and ask for your votes." Nice try Fritz. I bet you say that to all the girls. Main GJ 400 gained national attention for disrupting CIA recruiting visits at their campuses, the first of such opposition happened weeks before here at the University. A group of about 100 protesters decided to hold a "trial" for three CIA recruiters on hand at the MLB for a in- formational meeting in early Novem- ber. Charging the CIA representatives with crimes ranging from the mining of Nicaraguan harbors to the overthrow of governments in El Salvador, Iran, and Chile, the protesters chased the recruiters across the street to their cars. In response to the action, the CIA cancelled all of its interviews which were scheduled for the next day. Though they eventually returned in December to conduct their interviews, the CIA had to confront another group of protesters upon their arrival in January for another set of interviews. Best Near Miss Members of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority escaped unharmed in late Sep- tember when a fire ripped through the attic of their house on Hill St. Faulty wiring in a bathroom ceiling fan was responsible for the blaze, which kept the women out of their house for ,the rest of the term while the damage was repaired. Best Code Development After months of bickering over the proposed code for nonacademic con- duct, University President Harold Shapiro decided to let the University Council, who developed the original draft of the code, come up with a new version of the document. Since then, the code has been tied up in committee meetings and with any luck will stay that way for a long, long time.N Best Men's Clothing Store Marty's Variety, style and easy accessibility on State street make Marty's the favorite clothing store for Ann Arbor men of all ages.
