The Best of Ann Arbor is proud to present a look back at the highlights
and lowpoints of the year's 'M' sports. Notable, but disappointing, ap-
pearances a the Holiday Bowl and NCAA Basketball Tournament provided
plenty of excitement for Michigan sports fans. Superstar players and great
coaching made it all possible. Hey, but let's not forget that sports has its
lighter side too.

Remember that wretched first date
(there may have been more than one)
that couldn't end soon enough? Too bad
you didn't go to Bicycle Jim's-it was
just voted the best place to take a first
date. The food and atmosphere are
pretty good, but it's the booths by the
windows that are invaluable-they let
you and your date discuss the passer-
sby on South U.

The Folks
Gandy Dancer
This category should actually be
"Best Place To Have The Folks Take
You." You can't afford it, but they can.
It's been said that the Gandy Dancer's
seafood is the best in the midwest, and
it may well deserve that praise.

French toast at 3 a.m. where else are
you going to go? The food is good, but

Michigan 22, Miami 14
Six interceptions against the immor-
tal Bernie Kosar and a stunning defeat
against the number one team in the
country in the Wolverines' opener.
Gee, for about a week there, people ac-
tually thought we were going to have a
good football team.
Worst Football Game
Michigan State 19, Michigan 7
Quarterback Jim Harbaugh was lost
for the rest of the season to a separated
shoulder and we lost to a bunch of
agriculture majors from Muskegon.

Best Basketball Game
Michigan 69, Iowa 67, (3 OT)
A classic. The Wolverines trailed by
12 at the half, staged a second half
rally, led by the hot shooting of Gary
Grant, to tie the game at the end of
regulation. Finally, in the third over-
time, Roy Tarpley hit a shot at the
buzzer that sent Michigan dancing
the lockerroom and Hawkeye coach
George Ravelling chasing after the
referee.
Worst Basketball Game
Indiana 87, Michigan 62
No question about this one. In the
Wolverines' first nationally televised
game of the season (ESPN), the
Hoosiers thoroughly embarassed a
sleepwalking Michigan squad by 25
points. Worse yet, the game was played
during winter break, which means that
everyone was dragging friends and
relatives in front of the set to see the
Wolverines suffer their worst loss at
Crisler since it opened in 1967.

Best Evidence That Mich-
igan Fans Are Sub-par
North western football game
While Michigan was running up a 31-0
victory, the crowd noise came not after
Wolverine touchdowns but after Alan
Trammell's home runs in the fourth
game of the World Series, which seemed
to interest more people.

Athletic Department
April30, 1984
Hockey coach John Giordano and
women's basketball coach Gloria Soluk
had the word "Former" added to their
respective titles and both programs are
looking up under new coaches Red
Berenson and Bud Van De Wege.

Most Overrated Coach
Glenn E. Schembechler
Who else? The best football coach of
the mid-70's is rapidly becoming the
most mediocre mid-80's. His childish
antics and Eisenhower offense have
grown tired over the years.
Coach Most Liked By His
Or Her Players
Red Berenson
To fully appreciate it, you have to
look at his predecessor, John Giordano.
After five years of that stiff, Berenson,
a former NHL coach-of-the-year must
have looked like the second coming.

came home to face the undefeated
Russians with less than 24 hours of rest.
Freshman Joe Lockwood scored the
game winner.

Dale Bahr's grapplers finished their
season ranked fifth in the nation, yet
how many Michigan fans could name
two members of the squad?
