LIBERTY 2 BLOCKS OFF STATE 663-6771 Page 8 - The Michigan Daily - Thurs Goph By JOE EWING Last week, the Michigan basketballl team gave coach Bill Frieder what he wanted, a split of a tough weekend road trip to Illinois and Purdue that kept Frieder's squad in the thick of the Big Ten race. But as the Wolverines return to Crisler Arena for contests tonight against Minnesota and Saturday night with Iowa, their mentor has an even taller order for them to fill. "IF WE'RE going to challenge for the Big Ten title," said Frieder, "then win- ning a couple at home would be most important. But we're going to take them one at a time." And according to the Michigan head man, the place to start is against Min- nesota. Michigan is close behind at 2-2 (10-3 overall) and could overtake the Gophers with a victory. But that probably won't be an easy task. Minnesota has shown some incon- sistency during the season, losing to the likes of lightweights Detroit, Indiana State and Purdue. But they have also come through against tougher opponen- ts, with upsets of Illinois and Iowa, and two wins on a west-coast trip over Christmas. e~ Aexander ...off to hot start "THEY'VE WON some big games at home, beating Illinois and Iowa," said Frieder. "And they've won some tough ones on the road, like out at Arizona and Oregon." The Gophers' strong spot is at guard. The experience and scoring touch of senior Tommy Davis, and the quickness and ball handling skills of freshman Todd Alexander should mat- ch up well with the skills of Michigan's backcourt duo of Antoine Joubert and Gary Grant. Davis finished fifth in conference scoring last season and holds down the third spot in the Big Ten this year, averaging 20.7 points per game. The 6-4 team captain played crucial roles in both of the Gophers' conference wins so far this year by hitting a last second bucket to beat the Illini and by pouring in 18 points against Iowa. "HE'S BEEN the guy that carried us most of the way," said Minnesota head coach Jim Dutcher, a former Michigan assistant. "He does the scoring. Some games he doesn't score a lot, but he scores when we need it." "Tommy Davis has been playing sen- sational," noted Frieder. "He's a great, great basketball player, capable of scoring anywhere on the court, inside or out." While Davis has done everything ex- pected of him this year, Minnesota has been pleasantly surprised by his back- court partner Alexander. The 5-11 freshman took over the starting spot just prior to the beginning of conference play and has been sensational ever sin- ce, averaging 12.7 points per game while handling the Minnestoa offense. "HE'S GOT good quickness," said Dutcher, who will be looking for only his second victory at Crisler in his 10 years as Minnesota top man. "He's not very big, but he'll be the quickest man on the floor. He is also good with the ball. He played 35 minutes against Illinois without any turnovers, and he was guarded by Bruce Douglas." University of Detroit head coach Don Sicko, whose Titans downed the Gophers 77-67 before Alexander became a regular, thinks he makes a difference in the lineup. "I think that they play better with him," claimed Sicko. "He makes them better." The Wolverines defeated Sicko's Titans in the season opener, 80-66. UP FRONT, a real battle could shape up between Wolverine center Roy Tar- pley and his Gopher counterpart John Shasky. Shasky, a 7-footer out of Bir- mingham Brother Rice, has averaged 7.4 rebounds and 11.3 points per game and was vital in shutting down big men Michael Payne and Greg Stokes in the victory over Iowa. A real trouble spot for Minnesota might be the forwards, where sophomore Kevin Smith and freshman Mitchell Lee could lack the experience to go against veteran Wolverines Rich Rellford and Butch Wade. "Michigan's front line is definitely better," said Sicko. "If Michigan is going to win the game, it's going to be there." 4 4 T - Daily Photo by DAN HABIB Michigan's Antoine Joubert; looks to pass in a game earlier this year. "I sure wouldn't pay that much to watch me play football," said Miami quarterback Dan Marino, who will try to finish off a record setting year Sun- day with a win over the San Francisco 49ers. "WHY? It's on television, that's why." The weather turned delightful around the San Francisco area Wednesday, weather that would be raved about if it should stick around for Sunday's game. And as the Super Bowl drew nearer, the already frantic effort to get tickets threatened to go right off the scale. THE fluctuation of ticket prices was being watched as closely as the stock market. "The price is as high as it has ever been," said one ticket broker in Los Angeles, "and there is no sign that it is going to fall. 7n4e9flL$1 '5 5s A Statistical and Reporting Software for IBM PC/XT and AT* SPSS/PC is the most comprehensive statistical package available for performing simple or complex tasks, regardless of data size.
