The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, April 9, 1985 - Page 7 I I Records The Elvis Brothers - Adventure Time (Portrait/ CBS) A jumpy grit-in-teeth boy pop group of the sort that popped onto vinyl en masse during the first great post-Elvis Costello Wave (Knack, Romantics, etc.), the Elvis Brothers are surprising and pleasant as a throwback to those days of wavin' yore (which were, ad- mittedly, only five or so years back). Although they're probably a good deal more lightweight than they'd ever ex- pect. As you might expect, they have one or two great pop tunes up their sleeve. The absolute yes is the first single, "Don't Take My Guns Away," a whiff of London Calling-era sweetened Clash with an expert mock-New Right lyric coupled to immaculate ringing "gee-tars" and the kind of sharp-edged pop-tune structure that must have given Billy Joe that last burst of im- petus when hurling himself off the TalahassieBridge. A minor classic. The second perhaps, is "Akido Shin- doda," a sort of "Puff the Magic Dragon" type ditty as played by the Police and sung by some mid-'70s teen faves. There are other charming songs as well, even if alot of them sound like E. Costello throwaways and have lyrics like "touch me baby/and the devil calls my name." *Good cuts include "Burnin' Desire," "Holy Moly," the snappy "Count to Three," and the more blatant rockabilly-revivalist tracks "I Wonder Why," and "Big Ideas." Produced by Adrian Belew - a gifted lightweight himself - Adventure Time has relen- tless bounce and a built-in naievete of appeal. Calling up strong trail scents of Squeeze, the Everlys, early Beatles, Buddy Holly and The Sweet (not a bad resource list, if you askme) as well as the omnipresent Elvis C., the Elvis Brothers tend to make up in earnest- ness and good cheer what they lack in originality. This LP sounds a bit silly (but maybe temporary loss of credibility is what you get for ignoring current trends), but it's, if not A-OK, at least B-plus-OK by me. The band itself - a Madison, Wiscon- sin trio - looks terribly cosmeticized and pawn-like on the cover and sleeve art, but that's probably just the effect of the usual overzealous and un- derimaginative CBS packaging and isn't their fault. .- Dennis Harvey Orchestrator-New World Music Very pretty, epic-sounding local EP of sweetened slow artpop strongly reminiscent of the Moody Blues, with the necessarily faceless/warm- sensitive vocals and spacey mix of acoustic/electric/programmed aural surfaces. Fans of Pink Floyd in their mellower moments ought to be well fond of the graceful "Dreams in Slow Motion," while a more "anthemic Alan Parsons feel is evoked on the upbeat, antiwar "The Tide is Turning." The subtly exhilirating "New World View", and acoustic harmonic emphasis of "Mother Earth" all convey Or- chestrator's persuasive if quite obliviously outdated full-scale pop romanticism. There's a remarkable ambition at work here for a homegrown project; it must have taken incredible nerve and belief to manage just the finance of New World Music's . six tracks, all of which feature lust but never overstated orchestration. Yet a certain windiness of semi-pointless rrostalgia lingers on like a hangover, even after the gorgeous synthpop drive of the first and best track, "Visions for a Brave New World." I hope these guys find exactly what they're after-not that we couldn't all use a stiff shot of, universal good vibes-but suspect they're about ten years behind finding anyone else very interested in investing money on their agreeable-enough aural meditations on the matter. Worthy for fans of the M-Blues, P-Floyd, earlier Yes, et al. (Available from Or- chestrator, P.O. Box 15526, M Detroit, MI 48215). -Dennis Harvey Joe's gets plowed Imagine the Ventures crossed with New Order, throw in a little new-age psychedelia, and you've got a rough idea of the appeal of Love Tractor, the Atlanta, GA band playing tonight at Joe's Star Lounge. A leading member of the burgeoning Atlanta (R.E.M., Guaducanal Diary, etc.) scene, Love Trac- tor has released four records of primarily instrumental music on the Lan- dslide/dB label.
